Dark Eyed Marionette

The Dark Eyed Marionette is a marionette of unknown providence. Created at some point in the past 100 years just outside the bounds of Anglo-Saxon Britain. With pitch black eyes and a sad expression, it can unnerve people who see it. Primarily made of wood, string, metal fittings, pieces of leather and old style clothing, it's eyes appear to be made of onyx.

History

The Dark Eyed Marionette was created somewhere in the region between Cornwall, and the western Anglo-Saxon lands of southern Britain. Whispered to have been created by a coven of witches in this area, it bears an occult mark above where the heart would lie in it's chest. Done in the shape of a drop of blood it is barely visible now, and hard to see.

Made primarily of wood, with metal fittings, it also contains leather, and linen clothing. Horse hair string and a wooden handle is also attached. Examining it, most would notice that there is wear & tear to it, and fading of colours normally associated with it's age. The difference is the eyes, where these appear to be made of onyx. No major damage ever seems to have been noticed to it, or parts replaced.

Rooted in the region is stories that such a creature has been used to entertain & look after young children bringing them joy and a spell meant to protect them at all costs. What is known is that a few deaths have occurred at least in Anglo-Saxon lands nearby. Stories persist that the Dark Eyed Marionette has been the only surviving item after a number of catastrophic accidents to individuals , families and whole communities when a child or their family has been harmed in some way.

These persisted over a number of decades in the early 8th Century after which the marionette disappeared from any record.

Then it resurfaced, in the wildlands to the west of the Frankish Empire. There it has slowly worked it's way into the lands of the Franks. So far it has been passed from one owner to another and in every case reports of a streak of bad luck, misfortune, health problems and such like has surrounded the marionette. Many buyers seem to have been involved in magic & occult circles due to some telling the previous stories and that the item now has some dark entity attached.

Those that have came in contact with it over the years report that the marionette seems harmless at first, especially when young children are present. When not, and deep into the night, the marionette is meant to give off a cold disturbing nature, with attacks on the owners leaving three scars on the victim's body, along with fires starting out of the blue, nightmares, strange noises and speech being heard. The area around is said to get cold and light sources get lower. Animals don't seem to like them either getting aggressive with the owner, the marionette or both, or running away.

So far it has made it's way through to Parisius and then on to Orleans. After arriving in the latter it quickly disappeared and and nobody knows where it has gone. What is known is that it passed through the hands of the de Rais family who lost a number of assets to the rulers of Eschbach. A few speculate it may appear now in Eschbach but only time will tell....
