Coopers / Cooperage

Coopers make an assortment of wooden barrels and the like with rope or metal rings around them for storage purposes. They used timber staves that are heated or steamed to make them pliable. These usually have flat heads / ends. They made the following: casks, barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, vats, hogsheads, firkins, tierces, rundlets, puncheons, pipes, tuns, butts, troughs, pins and breakers. Journeymen Coopers also traditionally make: wooden implements, such as rakes & wooden-bladed shovels. It is is the job of Hoopers to put the rope of metal rings on the finished product. Eventually many will adopt this as their surname.
