Clothiers Profession in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Clothiers

Clothiers are a profession that specialises in making clothes and producing cloth bolts. They prepare the cloth bolts and make daily money by it. In many societies in Europe the clothes worn by commoners are usually made by family members, especially the women. A clothier would be too expensive for the common folk who would buy the cloth bolts, or by weaving clothing as well. Leather producers would provide any leather needed. The clothier would work with higher members of society who would ask for some of the more expensive fashions to be provided. This would include silk, and for the lower end, there would be cotton, wool, flax, and linen, though most levels of society would take in elements of them. The clothier would have some way of measuring the cloth needed, a pair of sheers and/or scissors, some way to mark out the shapes, and needles & threads to carry out the work.
