Blood Claw Encampment Settlement in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Blood Claw Encampment

A tribe of Orcs originally from Wales, now living in north west Frankia, the Blood Claws have took over a town near the north coast. It gives them both access to the sea, and a base to carry out raids on the surrounding region. The Alans that have settled here 3 to 4 hundred years ago have fought running battles against them, and have found the town has been converted into a large Orc encampment with more Orcs arriving every few weeks.   It has been fortified with emplacements holding plenty of fighters, along with stables for aurochs, and at least two buildings converted into one to house the odd ogre & a couple of trolls. Nurseries for the young and training areas, along with supply depots & blacksmiths are in the centre of the town making them hard to attack. Patrols roam the town along with the surrounding region looking for any potential fight. A few Orogs lead & organise the patrols, and carry out their own patrols too. A few goblins have made their way to the town, acting as scouts, spies, scroungers, and runners for the Orcs. Most of the Orcs and their allies live around the buildings surrounding the town behind barricades that break up many roads, paths & alleyways, and overlook buildings, and act as lines of defence. A few Half-Orcs are present too, and help pick out targets for Orc warbands hailing from here.   At the centre is the old mayors quarters, and townhall. This has been converted to a private residence for the Blood Claw leadership. It contains a few specialist Orcs, as well as their leader, and a shaman. Skulls are placed throughout the building, along with a banner of a sickly gray colour with three red stripes flying from the highest point on the roof. The remains of enemies are hung from gibbets, and spikes throughout the town to help make the place more menacing. Wild dogs sometimes move through the town eating some of these remains. A regularly patrolled road leads down to a badly maintained harbour that contains a couple of hundred coracles stacked on one another, and a couple of badly maintained Viking dragon ships. The main town ,and at places along this road, has wooden towers built by the Orcs with hanging banners of the Blood Claw tribe, and usually corpses, or parts of corpses, hanging from them. Usually these are maintained by 5 to 10 Orcs, and the first to spot enemies approaching.   Also, the town has a series of trenches built here and there to break up and funnel enemy troops into designated kill zones, and other defences such as timber stakes (with the points facing away from the town), covered holes containing punji sticks, and at least two catapults inside the town too. The trenches are not fully joined to help with movement between them, and are about two meters apart (three deep), and 1.5 meters deep. These are built in a way when three are built there is slight differences where one starts and ends between them to confuse the enemy, and built in a way to be able to be seen from the town side only.   The town's name is all but forgotten and is slowly falling apart as the Orcs barely maintain anything outside of the defences, and what is needed to survive. The only place maintained is the warlord's hold at the centre, partly because the treasures they have amassed, even if it is meagre compared to other regions is also stored there.
