Arzon Settlement in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Arzon

Arzon is a a village in Brittany. At present it is starting to come under gradual rule by the Franks as they seize more land and settle the Breton peninsula. It is located at the extremity of the Rhuys peninsula, and the Atlantic is on it's left (the west), and to the right (east is the Gulf of Morbidan.   Lately a squad of Frankish soldiers have been sent to see if they can subjugate the village and surrounding hamlets. None of them have been heard from since.  There has been talk of the locals having a certain 'fishy' quality about them. A smell of fish, scaly skin, and large bulbous eyes are not uncommon amongst the locals. These seem to get more pronounced as they get older, and no-one over the age of 50 seems to be present in the region.   Stories tell of an old island about 5 miles of the coast in the Atlantic that has a small natural harbour to the continent side that the locals sometimes use while out fishing to stay over, especially at night or during the storm. There is a rumour around the local Romano-Celtic peoples that a small strangely carved statue of a finned & frilled being is at the harbour. It looks scaled with big eyes and decorated with simple silver jewellery. It is also not the first time that people have disappeared in the region, and both Christian missionaries & Druids are treated with open hostility here. Nobody but the locals seem to bother with the island as anyone else that goes to it never comes back.   Shipwrecks are common here in this small stretch between the island and the coast. A legend that many druids tell is that there are beings living in the waters who hate all land dwellers, and their parents dwell in the ocean far way to the north west. Some have came on land and supposedly mated with humanoids creating cursed half-breeds. No-one has yet proven just how much of this is true.
