With the support of his new foster father, Master Chief Petty Officer Herbert Kibblewhite, Paolo makes an effort to join the Coalition Space Fleet and become an officer.

Paolo’s reputation as a bully preceded him, even though he stopped being a bully over a year earlier. He had a tough time making friends because of this, and also his PTSD made him suffer. He had trouble focusing on his studies, and nearly flunked several times. Both Herbert and Paolo’s foster brother, Calvin, pushed him to keep trying. Eventually it was winning the Academy Martial Arts Tournament, and becoming the spokesperson for the Anti-Bullying Campaign that made him put in the effort to stay the course. No Fourth Class Midshipman had won the tournament before Paolo.
