Nilton Rhakes

Standing roughly 5'8" tall and marked with the unusual mottled mix of different skin tones that is a characteristic of the Yerendi, Nilton gives off a sense of quiet confidence. He possesses the slim but muscular build of someone who has spent most of their life living off the land, and his simple but rugged ecledda clothing is clearly suited to outdoor life.

As a young boy in Kerevin's Drop, Nilton was always curious about the numenera and imagined himself building wonderous inventions using long forgotten technology. However, lacking the kind of connections that might enable him to join the Malkine League the only work he could find was as a Gleam Dredger, helping to dig out fragments of iotum and parts for others to use. Even worse, he found that any curiosity on his part about his finds was met with hostility, his job being just to dig and find and not to ask any questions.

He was profoundly unsatisfied with this situation, and seeing no opportunity to change his lot in Kerevin's Drop, he decided to see what else was out there in this world. Setting off with his childhood friend Amatha Corazon, they befriended and arranged to travel with the nomadic Thalun-Ik, and traveled with them for a time learning how to live off the land. Through this, they became familiar with other settlements and the lands between them and once they felt they could competently do so they set out on their own to explore.

They soon became quite successful at finding Numenera in the wilds, with Nilton being adept at digging it up and Amatha having a talent for getting the best price. Through this they were working to build up enough capital to start a shop in Niquantin. However, whilst exploring an unusual ruin, a mishap with a numenera device resulted in Nilton becoming out-of-phase with the rest of reality and unable to leave the ruins.

He does not know how long he was trapped in this state, as a side effect of the device was that he ceased to feel hunger or need sleep and that time would sometimes pass differently with night and day passing as if on fast-forward. He only knows that he was eventually able to become corporeal again with the help of another group of adventurers who later came to explore the same ruins.
