Elf

In tunnels under lonesome hills and behind thickets in the darkest forest glades live the elves, ageless, eerie beings living lives incomprehensible by men. Their homes are deliberately occluded from the world, realms of wonder built and maintained by their ancient magic. Within, they live lives surrounded by fancy and peculiar delights, rarely venturing out to the surface world, where humans reign. Every such elven realm is different, for the aesthetic tastes of the elves are as broad as millennia of imagination might allow.   The elves are known to be dangerous. Peasant superstition holds that they abduct babies from the crib, and lead youths and maidens away to join them in profane rites. But even the learned take great caution where elves are concerned, for it is known that in primordial times, during the downfall of their civilization, the elves were condemned by the gods for some unspoken Sin. The greater part of the elven race have been mad ever since, kept docile only by the fantasies of their sylvan realms.   Those who are sane are only so because they blighted their own memories, to forget the Sin, and in their obliviousness to find peace. The ability and desire to reproduce has long left the surviving elves, but once a century or so those elves who chose to forget are drawn back into their mystic homes, where they are reborn in a state of innocence, the events of the past hundred years forgotten.   The elves are despised by the gods of men. To some cults and gods they are an irredeemable enemy, to be slain on sight. To others, they are objects of pity, or lessons as to the wages of godlessness. The Syraic faith tolerates elves, but they are anathema, forbidden from setting foot in churches except in the direst of circumstances. The elves seem to have no gods of their own. Some reflect the antipathy of the gods, others mock the divine as merely pompous souls swollen on their own might. Those who do bow their heads to a higher power commune instead with the small gods of nature, speaking to groves, springs, and other topoi listening for fruitful answers.
