Swordarm Lakespider
A demonic beast that dwells in the lakes of the Demon Realm.
Basic Information
Anatomy
An isopod with long serrated claws and a snapping turtle face. They have toxic spines growing out of their carapace segments.
Genetics and Reproduction
Lakespiders reproduce via egg-laying. It typically takes around 100 years for their eggs to hatch, and they usually lay only 2-3 at a time.
Growth Rate & Stages
Newly hatched lakespiders tunnel into the bottom of a lake, remaining in tunnels for their first few molts (roughly a few hundred years) - after this, their shells harden enough for them to venture into the wider lake. While they are still smaller, if their current lake is overcrowded, some lakespiders will travel down rivers in search of a new home. Once they reach adulthood at four or five hundred years, they are usually too big to leave their lake home anymore.
Ecology and Habitats
Lakespiders dwell at the deepest parts of lakes, usually content to catch food in the depths. However, if food is scarce, they will journey towards the surface.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Lakespiders are carnivores that eat mainly fish.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Lakespider carapaces are often ground and used in rammed earth mixtures as mortar for walls, making them far stronger. During the Fractured Realm Ages, it was not uncommon to see armor crafted from young lakespider carapaces.

Lakespiders are able to sense movements in the water from a good distance away.
