Coriolis: The Escape (Part 3)
General Summary
Our story begins, a few days later, with the Deathwish crew getting a call from Malik Zitane, the xeno-archaeologist from the Infotheca. He confirms to the crew that he recieved the shipment of the portal builder artifacts from the crew and was successfully moved to the Foundation's undisclosed safe storage area. He then informs the crew that there is a Foundation exploration ship that has gotten approval to leave under orders from Morwan Pasa, the Foundation’s Council of Factions’ representative. He’s pulled some strings to get their crew on board as scientists with the help of the temporary transit passes Malik has gotten for the crew as negotiated by Yacoub for the artifacts.
Malik tells the crew that the exploration ship will be heading to Lubau for a short refuelling stop, and then head towards Uharu-9. However, Zitane can only take them to Lubau, and the Deathwish crew will have to find their way to the portal gates from there. Before getting underway, the Foundation is asking to do a few things.
Doctor, Who?
The Deathwish crew is tasked by Malik to find and escort a Dr. Wana, a researcher for the Archaeological institute. Malik says the Foundation ship won't leave unless he is on board since he is a necessary member of the crew for the expedition. Unfortunately, the Foundation has lost contact with Dr. Wana ever since the gang wars erupted all over the station. Fearing for his safety, Malik tells the crew its highly important to find him as he has knowledge of very sensitive information of their research and of the Foundation that, in the wrong hands, could jeopardize the Foundation politically and the safety of their scientists. The crew accept the job, and Malik proceeds to tell the crew Dr. Wana's last known location according to his last datapad transmission. He was last located in the Garden of Seekers; a small garden dedicated to the Seeker Cult of the Church of the Icons. The crew head there to investigate any leads of where Wana could be.
The Vendetta
As the crew arrive at the Garden of Seekers, they find that the garden is oddly deserted. Usually a place of quiet contemplation for students and or those looking to escape the busy promenade, the garden engulfed in the darkness of the station's night cycle with only the rad-lights that line its pathways lighting the way. The crew walk cautiously into the garden, and a loud bang is heard. A crew member is hit with what looks like a bullet and ricochet's off his/her armour. The crew scatter and take cover under a park bench, fountain, and behind a tree. Izzaldin is hurt and bleeding from subsequent shots from the unknown sniper, but is dragged to the tree and into cover by Nos Ibaz. Meanwhile, Hassan and Wahil take cover under a park table. Hassan decides to run out towards the fountain to see if he can attract the sniper's attention in order to find out the direction of the shots. However, he gets shot badly and is injured as he runs towards the fountain. As they are getting shot at, the crew find out there are multiple snipers shooting at them, but more importantly, they are being coordinated by none other than Jina, the late Lavim Tamm's friend. Izzaldin recognizes her immediately and implores her to stop firing, and that it is them, the Deathwish crew. However, Jina isn't interested and tells Izzaldin that she wants the crew dead for letting her best friend die under the hands of the Syndicate, and for allowing that to happen. Izzaldin pleads with her that it wasn't their fault, and the Syndicate was the one who ordered his death. Jina replies from her tree hiding place that it was because of the Deathwish and them taking the job to find Lavim Tamm was how the Syndicate found him. Jina kept him safe and alive until the Deathwish found him and led the Syndicate to him. Alone, with no family, and nothing else left to live for after the Kuan incident, she decides to join the Syndicate in order to take revenge on them by moving up the ranks. She becomes a cold-blooded assassin for them, and when the gang wars erupted on station, she knew it was the Deathwish who started it. She then decided to hunt the Deathwish crew to exact revenge for Lavim's death. Jina take a few more shots at the Deathwish crew and ends up critically injuring Hassan. Hassan is very close to dying at this point unless the crew neutralizes Jina and her sniper crew. Wahil spots the other snipers and manages to incapacitate one and kill the other. Hassan manages to counter-snipe Jina and manages to knock her out of her tree, and knock her unconscious. The crew decide to take the unconscious Jina back with them. After further search of the garden, they find a small datatab on the ground and on inspection of its contents, they find that Dr. Wana is being held against his will in a Syndicate safehouse in the Spire's Ischara district.
The Bad Side of Town
Getting into the Spire is considerably difficult. The Spire is altogether different from the rest of the station. It is Coriolis Station's living and entertainment area for the rich and well off. There is more open space, more light, and less people here than in the Ring or the Core. The ceilings are higher, the ventilation systems make sure the air is fresh and dry, the holo sky is brighter here than down below, and the street lights in the narrow streets keep the shadows away. With that being said, the gang wars all over the station has made the Spire an impenetrable fortress guarded by platoons of Coriolis guard and their surveillance drones. In order to get in, Wahil and Hassan try to create fake passes for themselves, Izzaldin, and Nos Ibaz. They hack through a directory of individuals residing or have business in the Spire, and manage to splice together passes for them to go through.
At the elevator into the Spire is a heavily guarded checkpoint. After a tense few questions by the guard, the crew is let in as merchants and residents of the Spire. As soon as they're in they head up to Ischara.
Upon reaching Ischara, the crew notices the that the Ischara is a business district. The Ischara is devoted solely to Consortium companies, and the three big ones – the Bulletin, the Colonial Agency, and the Foundation – each has a huge complex here. Open parks with artificial lawns, sculpture groves, and streams separate the big company buildings. Small cantinas and restaurants gather people from different companies in informal discussion. It is in these dizzying alleyways of cantinas, restaurants, and smaller businesses that the crew find themselves in according to the datatab's location of the safehouse. They realize that some unsavoury, but more well-dressed gang members of the Syndicate are seen patrolling the alleyways. The crew enter a cantina and realize that it is a Syndicate-owned operation. Wahil orders a Lubau Special at the bar to the interest of the Syndicate gang inside. He downs a shot while barely holding himself up to the excited cheers of the gang members inside. Hassan gives it a go as well, and instead goes for an entire bottle. Wide-eyed and excited, the Syndicate thugs cheer him on. Hassan finishes the bottle and slams it on the bar counter. Whoops and hollers erupt as the bar starts calling Hassan a bad-ass tough "Umif**ker." Wahil tells the gang members that they're new to the gang and were sent in from the Core Plaza to help out up here. As Wahil was explaining this, they are met with a Syndicate boss and asked the Deathwish crew and other Syndicate gang members to help with escorting and transporting a VIP hostage to one of their territories.
As the gang members file out of the bar to a waiting transport vehicle, the Deathwish crew try to get more information about the VIP hostage that they're transporting. They find out momentarily that the VIP hostage that they were transporting is in fact Dr. Wana. He is revealed as he is escorted all tied up from an adjacent building. After a tense exchange about the hostage and a few prodding questions that go too far, the gang lieutenant becomes suspicious of the new arrivals, and thinks they may be rival gang spies. The lieutenant ask the Deathwish crew to prove their loyalty by shooting each other. The Deathwish silently refuse by going banshee on the nearest gang member and charging together into melee combat. During this time, other gang thugs are alerted and start pouring out onto the street in large numbers. Outnumbered and outgunned, the Deathwish crew decide to grab Dr. Wana, hijack the transport, and attempt to escape. Wahil successfully grabs the doctor and gets into the transport along with Hassan and they hurriedly make their escape. Izzaldin and Nos Ibaz try to escape on their own to take the heat off of the transport, but are too late. Nos Ibaz is surrounded and overwhelmed. She is believed to be dead. Izzaldin almost escapes, but is shot and incapacitated. By some miracle of the Icons, she survives and tries to crawl to safety, but is finally shot dead through the head by a well-placed shot from a gang member's accelerator rifle. Hassan and Wahil look in terror as they see their captain slump to the ground as their vehicle leaves the district.
They hear a yell as they reach the outskirts of the Ischara, and as they look back, they see a bright white flash for a few seconds followed by a loud percussive sound. Black smoke and a burning building is seen in the distance.
