Kemet

Kemet is the largest kingdom on the planet Geb in Nilespace and holds incredible sway over its many lesser neighbors.

Demography and Population

The vast majority of Kemet's population is human and lives along the banks of the massive Nile River that makes up the heart of the kingdom.   Ruling over this human population is the pharoah and their court, a group of aasimar divinely selected by the god Ra to lead the people of Kemet. The aasimar further serve as the heads of the pharaonic religion.   There are also a substantial minority of humanoids with animal traits throughout the kingdom. These select species were originally humanoids that were blessed by various members of the Pharaonic Pantheon to serve as their priests and blessed chosen. While they are referred to in an astrally standardized way (for instance, a pharaonic tabaxi for the chosen of Bast) due to their superficial similarities, these races are not connected in origin to the tabaxi, minotaurs, and so on to the similarly named creatures from the the wider spelljamming community.   Examples of these chosen races and the gods that have blessed them include:
  • Falcon aarakocra (Re-Horakhty)
  • Khenra (Anubis)
  • Yuan-ti (Apep)
  • Tabaxi (Bast)
  • Female minotaurs (Hathor)
  • Swallow aarokocra (Isis)
  • Crocodilian lizardfolk (Sobek)
  • Ibis aarakocra (Thoth)
When a group of giff first arrived in Nilespace, they were mistaken by Kemeti as the long-lost chosen people of Taweret, a goddess of fertility depicted as a bipedal hipptamus. Objects of worship, the giff made the unusual decision for their race to settle on Geb. In time, the Giff acknowledged their position was due to Taweret, to whom they offered thanks in earnest that turned into genuine worship over time, though the giff have never forgotten their spacefaring roots.

Government

All of Kemet is led by the pharaoh, who commands absolute power over all elements of Kemeti society, from religion to the military  to administration. Assisting in this herculean effort is a legion of viziers, advisors, and a vast administrative state.   Each pharaoh serves until death, whereupon the title is passed to the oldest son, barring exceptional circumstances where brothers or even daughters may inherit.

Technological Level

An ancient kingdom, Kemet possess advanced knowledge of spelljamming and possess its own fleet. Among its vessels are the Flying Pyramids, large tombs of deceased pharaohs that can be seen guarding Geb or out in the depths of the Astral Sea, where they were sent to be entombed for eternity.   Terrestially, Kemet has made great strides to connect its lengthy kingdom. The great deserts around Kemet are crisscrossed with train tracks, connecting the once scattered oases with the heartland of the Nile. Kemet has also made great strides in magical study, which is almost universally connected to worship of the gods. The greatest Kemeti wizards are invariably worshippers of Isis.

Foreign Relations

While the Kingdom of Kemet doesn't control the entire population of Geb, it exerts significant cultural and military influence over its neighbors. To the north of Kemet is the large sea of the Wadj-Ur, where the city states of the Keftiu exist. At times trading and waring with Kemet and each other, they are viewed by Kemet as unorganized barbarians. To the east of Kemet is the kingdom of Kheta, a long-standing rival of Kemet, and the two nations have warred off and on with each other over the centuries. To the south is Ta-Seti, where the Nile originates, a region that Kemet has directly owned at various points in time. Kemet strives to keep its monopoly on the stars, by ensuring that no other nation on Geb has any meaningful access to spelljammers.   Among spacefaring communities, there is a haughtiness to interactions with the leaders of Kemet that is rivaled only by the elves of the Imperial Elven Navy. The existence of worship of Ptah across the Astral Sea is proof for the Kemeti of their people's ancient ties to spacefaring, though others believe that Ptah may not have been native to Geb.   Nevertheless, Kemeti are active trading partners to other spacefaring communities, and it is not uncommon to see Kemeti among the spelljamming crews of the Rapide Frontier.
