The Lands Above

The Lands Above, or as they are more commonly referred to in casual speech, the Surface, are the series of large islands that are able to float above the Sea of Clouds due to their connection to the World Tree. At the center of each island is a Rootheart, which gathers the power of the World Tree and spreads it throughout the island, allowing it to stay floating atop the clouds. Over time the Rootheart will grow old and gradually lose its ability to keep the island floating as the magic with slowly runs out. When this happens, the island will sink below the clouds and land somewhere in the Sunken Lands. The Roothearts are able to regenerate themselves if damaged, but they can still be killed if someone were to inflict significant enough damage upon them at one time. Once an island has sunken the root of the World Tree will retract for a time to replenish its store of magic. After enough time has passed the root with gather up a portion of the land around it and raise up a new island. The rate of new islands rising up is approximately the same as the rate at which islands fall, but wars between nations and islands lost during rampages have slowly decreased the number of islands over the years, making land icreasingly more valuable.
