Dr. Nicodemus Rutkowski was once a brilliant and promising geneticist, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in genetic engineering. From a young age, Nicodemus was fascinated with the idea of genetic manipulation, driven by an obsession to improve and perfect the human condition by splicing DNA from various organisms. Working for the controversial biotech company BioEden, he pushed the boundaries of ethical science with increasingly radical experiments, particularly focusing on genetic splicing with lab rats. His crowning achievement was the creation of the “Adrenaline Maximizer” serum, or AdMax, which could enhance human abilities by splicing adrenal glands from rats with human DNA.
However, his success was short-lived. When his unethical methods were exposed, BioEden disowned him, and he became a fugitive, continuing his work underground. Forced into hiding, he sold his services to criminal syndicates, continuing his twisted experiments in secret.
Rutkowski’s life took a disastrous turn during a fateful encounter with the vigilante Corax. In the midst of a pursuit through his secret lab, Rutkowski fell into a vat of his own unstable mutagenic compounds—a serum mixed from human and rat DNA. The exposure resulted in a grotesque mutation, transforming him into a terrifying hybrid of man and rodent. Though initially horrified by the change, he eventually embraced his new form, seeing it as the ultimate embodiment of his scientific work. From that moment on, Doctor Rutkowski became Lab Rat.
Now hiding in the abandoned Halifax Catacombs, Lab Rat continues his obsessive work, focusing on perfecting his mutation and creating even more horrific biological weapons. He is driven by a burning desire for revenge against Corax, whom he blames for the accident, and plans to unleash chaos on the world above. Lab Rat is also fiercely protective of his mutated form and is determined to defend it from those who would seek to "cure" him, particularly the RCMP and other organizations that see him as a threat.
While Lab Rat may consider alliances with other villains to further his goals, his arrogance and erratic behavior make him an unreliable partner. Ultimately, his ambition is to prove that his twisted science is superior to conventional ethics, and that his warped vision of evolution is the future of mankind.
