John “Wolf” Bane

John Mahiingan Bane (a.k.a. Wolf)

Background
John Bane, known as Wolf to those closest to him, was born and raised on a reservation in Northern Ontario. Even as a child, he exhibited a strong mechanical aptitude, often taking apart household items just to figure out how they worked. His family instilled in him deep cultural values rooted in loyalty, respect for nature, and the importance of community. But while he cherished his heritage, John’s curiosity and fascination with modern technology set him on a unique path.
Growing up, John witnessed his community suffer from the exploitation of corporate entities seeking to strip the land of its resources. This experience led to a distrust of big business and authority, and sparked a rebellious streak in him that would follow him into adulthood. John became involved in local resistance efforts to protect his home, learning firsthand how to stand up for justice and fight against oppression—values that would later shape his decisions and career.
In his early twenties, John left the reservation to pursue an engineering degree in Toronto. Enrolling at a reputable university, he specialized in mechanical engineering, automotive technology, and robotics. It was during his college years that he met Coraline Penrose, and they quickly became fast friends, with John often joking saying that she was “the only lawyer I trust.” His passion for blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology allowed him to excel academically, and though he received lucrative offers from major corporations upon graduation, John rejected the corporate path. He preferred the independence, hands-on work, and satisfaction of building things himself over the allure of financial success.
While in college, John also became immersed in Toronto’s underground racing circuit, where his reputation as a mechanic with a gift for fine-tuning engines grew quickly. His talent for building high-performance cars and motorcycles from scratch made him a legend in the scene, with his skills in high demand. However, this fast-paced lifestyle brought its share of dangers—one fateful night, a gang attempted to sabotage his racing bike. In one of her first outings as a masked vigilante, Coraline, now The Vulpes, saved John from the sabotage attempt.
Trusting her long-time friend, Coraline revealed her secret identity to John. Taken aback at first, John quickly saw the parallels between Coraline’s fight against crime and his own values of standing up to corruption and protecting the vulnerable. Without hesitation, John committed to helping her crusade. He became not only her personal mechanic but also the designer of her vehicles and gadgets, embracing his role as her partner in the war on crime.
John became instrumental in constructing and maintaining much of Vulpes’ equipment. He designed the Vixen, her custom-built motorcycle, capable of handling the most extreme urban environments. He also crafted her Fox-Ear sound amplification system, which allowed her to detect enemies and eavesdrop on conversations from afar, as well as her state-of-the-art night vision goggles. John’s knack for building reliable, high-tech gadgets suited for Coraline’s dangerous lifestyle has made him an invaluable part of her team.
As Coraline’s most trusted confidant, John is responsible for keeping all her gear in perfect working order, upgrading her tech, and even designing new gadgets to help her stay one step ahead of her enemies. His ability to problem-solve under pressure, combined with his vast technical knowledge, gives Vulpes a critical edge in her crime-fighting operations. While John prefers to work behind the scenes, he is always ready to offer tactical support and advice when needed.
Personality John Bane is a stoic, intelligent, and fiercely loyal man. His mechanical expertise is matched by his practical, grounded nature, which often serves as a counterbalance to Coraline’s more impulsive tendencies. John is deeply protective of Coraline, and while he worries about the dangers she faces, he respects her mission and supports her wholeheartedly. His dry sense of humor and no-nonsense attitude help keep the tone light, even when things get tense.
His Native American heritage is a central part of his identity, though he doesn’t often speak of it. John’s nickname, Wolf, reflects his fierce loyalty to those he considers family. He values hard work, honesty, and independence, traits that shape his approach to life and his relationships. Despite his tough exterior, John has a deep well of empathy, particularly for those who, like him, have experienced injustice or exploitation.
John’s mistrust of big corporations and government stems from his experiences growing up, and this rebellious streak fuels his decision to work outside conventional systems. Though he’s most comfortable working behind the scenes, John will never hesitate to step into the action if Coraline needs him, using his strength, skills, and unshakable loyalty to protect his closest friend and ally.
