Flaming Skies

Flaming Skies was a light phenomenon consisting of dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that covered the entire sky above the Saeric Basin. It has not occured in over 250 years.

Presentation: Colours and Form

The Flaming Skies consisted of red, crimson, orange, purple and yellow. Pink was also occasionally reported. The patterns it made in the sky were fluid and ever-changing. The forms were largely described as:
  • Swirls
  • Waves
  • Veil
  • Pulses
  • Flames

Causes

Regardless of the country, scholars and scientists of the Hubraic Age were generally united in their belief that the Flaming Skies phenomenon was a sign that the chthonic goddess, the Phoenix, had reached the end of her life, and was renewing its lifecycle in the destructive power of flames.   The causes precise causes of the light display was more fiercely debated. The Kredasene were largely in favour of the idea that Flaming Skies were generated by the actual flames of the Phoenix's death. Varsii droll tellers believed that it was a sign that the Phoenix had taken a human form that was dying, and that the lights signalled the Phoenix's return to her spiritual form. The Raskvaerii thought the lights were a reflection of the Phoenix's pyre on the mortal sky. Officially, Lormontai reluctantly acknolwedged that the lights were to do with the Phoenix; unofficially, the Flaming Skies could be anything from an omen or blessing from the Celestial Rhoi, or the tails of Celestial Merfolk entering the mortal realm.

Hope For A New Era

In the time Since The Great Confiscation, there has been a single, brief sighting of the Flaming Skies phenomenon, although its legitimacy is heavily disputed. It is said to have occurred in the aftermath of the Battle of Alahnis, although some scholars argue that it was more likely to have been from fires lit after the battle.   People of the Saeric lands hope and pray that they will live to see another Flaming Skies. It would herald the return of the Phoenix to Her throne, and a reprieve for the Souls condemned by the hatred of the Raven.
