blackmetal Material in The Sora | World Anvil

blackmetal

Blackmetal is a rare metal famed for its sturdiness and dark coloration. The metal is considered stronger than steel, while also being roughly the same weight.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Blackmetal has several useful properties. It is harder than steel and very resistant to changes in temperature, making it difficult to break, while also retaining a sharp edge. It has a glossy, pure black coloration from which it gets its name.

Compounds

Blackmetal can be alloyed with several different metals to extend its use. Marimate is an alloy of 60% blackmetal and 40% gold which retains much of blackmetal's hardness at the cost of some temperature resistance. Schwarzerz is a combination of 50% blackmetal and 50% silver which retains the temperature resistance at the cost of a little hardness. Blackmetal and iron can be combined in a 40/60 ratio to create an alloy called piceout which has all the properties of steel.

Geology & Geography

Blackmetal is traditionally found in metamorphic rock layers, particularly marble, where it is found in its native form. In other types of metamorphic rock, it is usually found as an ore, called fugilicite.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Blackmetal and its alloys are used as a replacement for steel in many applications. Because of its unique color, it is used as ornamentation across the Sora.

Refinement

Blackmetal is refined from fugilicite through bloomery, where it is heated to low temperatures that cause it to separate from the slag. The impurities are then broken off with a hammer and the pure blackmetal is taken to be worked.
