Fatemakers Session Four: The Driftmass
General Summary
The party rescued a family from a group of awakened farm animals, seemingly lead by Vaultin Chapman's white cat. The mother thanks them but wants nothing to do with the party's horses, and so she and her children set out to Trange-Sur-Lorre by themselves while the party continues on foot to the location of the shooting star.
The party soon comes across a glade, full of awakened animals come at the behest of the Bear King, whom the party has an audience with. He says he'll allow them to continue through his territory in exchange for information, seemingly on the skylands as a whole. He says he needs some time to think and dismisses the party to the glade, where they must wait for a second audience. They meet a band of animals, including a regal stag, a wounded owl, and a badger. Kellan heals the owl's wing, and the animals are very grateful. As the party waits, night falls and they go to sleep. Volundr fails to notice the creeping ambush of wolves during his shift, and the party is captured and imprisoned in a cellar below the Bear Kings throne room.
In the cellar they meet a strange creature from another planet, who informs them that the star is in fact, a Driftmass. It tells the party the Drift infects the wildlife of a planet, calling them to the Driftcore where it feeds on their essence. The alien tells them they must destroy the Driftcore, and end its threat before dying, its task fulfilled. There seems to be no escape from the cellar, but in gratitude for healing the owl, the badger from the group of animals before, Arviel, has come to the party's rescue, tunneling them out of the cellar and recovering their things.
The party continues on, eventually reaching the Driftmass and venturing inside. The mass is a ball of mummified flesh, with tunnels bored through for whatever was inside. They discover some more alien creatures, seemingly driven insane at some point, before finally coming across the Driftcore. The Drift speaks with them, though it is not very cooperative in answering their questions. They step out after talking to it and discuss what they should do. During this discussion Xander learns the red leather journal covered in strange glyphs is no longer in her possession.
It is finally decided that an end must be put to the Drift and the party goes in to face it, with the help of Arviel and Beor, two of the badgers. They fight and kill the Drift, recovering some alien jewelry after while they explore the last of the Driftmass.
