Eryn Siannodel Character in The Six Kingdoms of Aeduin | World Anvil

Eryn Siannodel

Eryn Siannodel is a middle-aged elf, a retired assassin, and the owner of The Golden Thorn in Ravensford. She was a member of The Assassin's Guild for hundreds of years until she decided to settle down a few decades ago, and still maintains her contacts there. When the local guard discovered there was an assassin plotting to kill the king inside her tavern, she was arrested alongside the party, despite being innocent. She then aided in their escape, informing them of a contact in Littleshade that would help them all clear their names, and accompanied them there.

Appearence

Eryn is a relatively tall elf, with broad shoulders and a sturdy build. She has a slightly ruddied and tanned complexion, with smile lines around her eyes and mouth, straw-coloured hair past her shoulders (often seen tied back in a quick ponytail), and warm brown eyes. As the owner of The Golden Thorn, she was normally seen wearing fairly standard clothing for her career - for example, a blouse and corset combination, a pair of simple trousers, and sturdy boots, all in neutral colours. This look was originally carefully constructed to help her blend in to the general population, but since retiring she adopted it full time. However, she still always carries several daggers visibly on her belt, and likes to wear a simple dark cloak that helps her hide in the shadows.

Personality

Loyal, protective and charming, despite her carreer as an assassin, Eryn is a largely a good person. She is a quick judge of character, but is always read to help those in need, and frequently donated money to Ravensford's town hall. Drinks on the house were common for those who needed cheering up, and anyone who was hungry ate free of charge - a practice which earned her plenty of appreciation, but also suspicion, as she never seemed in want of money despite her relatively low-paying job. She was very charismatic with the patrons and had become a local household name as a mother figure to go to when in trouble.

Whilst working with the guild, she prioritised contracts against corrupt politicians and merchants where possible, but was able to kill just about anybody for the right price. Her only rule was that she would not kill entire families where the children or partner were innocent. She still has no qualms about killing others, especially for personal safety, but has done her best to keep on the right side of the law since she retired in order to maintain a peaceful life. There have been a couple of mysterious deaths since she moved into Ravensford, but when investigated, the 'victims' always turned out to be perpetrators of unpunished heinous crimes.

However, she has been known to be quick to anger, and has very little patience with nonsense. A life in the shadows has also made her suspicious, and so she is reluctant to allow anyone to get close to her, and is always very thorough with her security. She believes there is a strong chance the Assassins' Guild may one day take out a hit on her for knowing too much - whether this is paranoia or healthy caution is up for debate.

History

Not much is known about Eryn's history. She worked under the Assassins' Guild for most of her life, and retired to a civilian life around the age of five-hundred and fifty years old. She was proven to have been good at her job as a hitwoman and respected by the other members, enough to have been trusted to fully retire despite having swathes of inside knowledge, and allowed to return when needed - even with strangers. Whilst some of the other members may resent her success, she was careful to make as few enemies as possible, lowering the chances of eventually becoming a target herself. She has never mentioned her family or any other personal details, and never showed any indication of wanting a family of her own after retirement. It is also unknown if Eryn is her real name or an alias, or what her codename was whilst working with the guild.

Party Interactions

Eryn was the first important NPC that the party ever met. Their relationship began in Ravensford, initially only thinking of her as a bardtender, but when the overzealous town guard announced that it was arresting everyone within her tavern indiscriminately, she offered an escape through a secret hatch in her pantry that she maintained in case her past caught up to her. She was very displeased with the current situation, as the guard were aware that there was an assassin planning to kill the King in the building, and if they were terrible enough to get caught before they had even arrived in the capital, they were terrible enough to drag her down too.

Unfortunately, the tunnel itself was fairly run-down, but they made it to the exit in one piece - only to be arrested anyway by some guards who had found it on the surface. They were all taken to the town jail for further interrogation and joined the other staff members and patrons of The Golden Thorn in the cells.

After failed attempts at working out for herself who the assassin was without resorting to violence, she and the party managed to break out of jail and barely escape the town itself. Furious that her simple life as a bartender here had been ruined, she set off to return to the Assassin's Guild to clear her name and bring down the imbecile that had compromised her. She invited the party to join her, as in doing so she would be able to clear their names, too.

When they reached Littleshade, she split from the party to meet her contact in the guild alone. A few days later, she returned to find the party she knew splintered, and strangers in their place. She offered to clear the names of those remaining, and told them to meet her along the road to Westcliff Castle.

Once the party had proven themselves in the trials to enter the Assassin's Guild, hidden under the castle, Eryn introduces them to Avalon, a relatively new assassin who has set up a meeting with The Silencefor the group. Avalon immediately seems rather taken by Maddie, and reveals in confience that he is also an avariel - but keeps his identity hidden for his safety.

During their stay in the guild, two party members recognise another assassin - Andrew White - as one of the patrons back at The Golden Thorn, solving the mystery of who the terrible assassin was. Eryn attends the meeting with The Silence alongside the party, informing her of the situation and advocating for Andrew's termination due to his incompetancy.

Once the meeting had been resolved, Eryn opted to stay with the guild for a while before attempting to rebuild her life once more. The party bid farewell and have not heard from her since.

How can you still care about this... this idiot's life, when he's ruined so many others? If you won't even the score, then I will.
