From time immemorial The Races of The Sword Coast have been ruled by a plethora of gods, goddesses, and other great and terrible entities. The Old Gods as they are called, ruled over the wind and the waves, the fields and the mountains. All marveled at their power and feared their wrath.
Then a millennium ago, a new message started to spread over the land. The Teachings of Chantrel spoke of the one true God, Chantrel, she of mercy and forgiveness. And out of the ashes of the The Imperium of Man rose The Holy Universal Church of Chantrel, spreading across The Sword Coast giving hope during The Dark Times, uniting men, elves, dwarves, and halflings.
But, in the last few centuries a new faith has spread from the south. This time telling of The Great Father. Unity, claims to be the last, perfect word of the creator of all things. And he too speaks to the hearts of men, elves, dwarves, and halflings.
Now The Old Gods fade as The Holy Universal Church of Chantrel and Houses of The Great Father spread across the land. And in their shadows, the smaller faiths of the dragonborn, the dwarves, and the druids struggle to survive.
Gameplay:
A character does not need to be a cleric or paladin to follow a religion. Remember that the vast majority of followers of a religion are not clergy. All the religions listed in this section are open to player characters (except for Lolth worship). When designing your character (whether a cleric/paladin or not) think about your character’s views on religion. Some questions to think about are:
What (if any) religion was your character raised in?
What (if any) religion does she practice? Why?
What is her opinion of the priests, temple, or church? Why?
What are her experiences and opinions of the other religions? Why?
How strongly does she hold these opinions? Why?
Has she changed her views over the course of her life, perhaps converted or deconverted? Why?
Has she had an “religious” experiences? Prophetic dreams? A calling?
Cleric class can follow any religion (except druidism and Lolth worship).
Paladin class can follow any religion (except druidism and smaller sects).
Druid class characters are only open to druids.
There is a lot of opportunity for player’s to develop their character’s religious beliefs. Use the following section as a starting point. Work with your DM if you want to develop a new religion, or deity, or sect for your character to follow or amend what is written here.
