There is one primary pantheon of deities in the Shatterlands; most humanoids find their beliefs within the pantheon. There may be other deities for some of the fringe races, but most argue that those deities are simply aspects of the gods and goddesses found on the primary pantheon, or that they do not exist at all.
Genesis
In the beginning, there was nothing. From that nothing, genesis occured. First came the moon, the darkside (Shar) and the light (Selune).
The Two-Faced-Goddess that was the moon created the Wild: the first life, the worlds and the stars. The wild wanted to create more life, and requested warmth, and the moon was split in its response. The dark side did not wish for more life, and the light side did. From this wish came the sun, and from the battles between Shar and Selune came other deities, dark and light, starting with Fortune, both good and bad. Two sides for each, and so the dichotomy of the world was fashioned. These deities of creation are the Prime Gods and Goddesses.
The Weave
The weave, that which is the very magic of the world, was created when Shar used a part of her very essence as a weapon against Selune, and their essences mixed to form Mystra, the Weave of the World. Mystra, daughter of the Moon, eventually sided more with Selune in their great unending war.
Other Gods and Goddesses
There are many other deities, some of which were created by errant energies in the war between the Moon, and others which were created by other deities themselves. The dichotomy continues within them, life and death, and two sides of concepts such as Death, and Balance.
The Elements
From the the prime essences came The Elements. There are four prime elements: Water, Air, Earth, Fire, many sub-elements, and many other elements besides, as seen in the varied types of elemental dragons.
The Genies
The Shatterlands is protected by the
four genies of the four primary elements. Djinni, Genie of Wind; Efreeti, Genie of Fire; Dao, Genie of Earth; and Marid, Genie of Water. It is by the power of these four that the first Shattering of the world was halted, as they brought their power together in balance to hold the world together. They accomplished this feat through the use of the Worldstone, in which they stored a portion of their power and left upon a channeling alter in a great temple. The Worldstone is the key to balancing their powers, and is a conduit through which they continue to funnel magic from accross the world, thus holding the lands together.
