31: Assassination Investigation
General Summary
The assassin watched his target for hours, for days, for weeks, learning her routine. He was patient and meticulous, waiting until the scene was fully set before he would strike. He donned his costume, the garb of the Cutthroat Canaries, and wandered around the Temple in plain view. He hung posters from their group denouncing the Broken God.
Then the night came when he would strike. None were prepared for his bloody work. His allies, certainly, did not know what the murderous deviant did that night, creeping in the dark. Ilmara, bless her soul, did not know what awaited in the darkness.
“MURDER! THERE’S BEEN A MURDER!” A young voice called out as Peter the Peddler’s small feet padded across the cobbled path through Ember Village. By the time the Crimson Eight heard the news and rushed to the Temple, the Captain of the Emberguard, Cora Clawgut, was already concluding her investigation. Knowing Gabriel was affiliated with the church, and knowing their reputation for getting things done, (and knowing she found nothing useful), she agreed to hand the investigation over to the group. The group showed up the next day as agreed to begin their investigation. They were greeted by a detective who had been sent to assist them. They set about questioning witnesses and looking for clues. After awhile, the trail lead half of the team to the Village Center and The Silver Spoon. Rowan went to question Jasmina, as there were hints that the culprit had snuck through the inn. Instead, he found her baby, Kiyoko, from whom Rowan seemed to garner information. With this information, he returned to the center of town and, alongside Gabriel and Ember, began to question Jin-e. Jin-e steeled his thoughts against the unwanted intrusion, but the others would not relent. The situation was made worse when the rest of the gang showed up from the Temple, followed by Ilmara, the Murdered Priestess, who had risen as a Revenant. A battle commenced, and the detective that had been supposedly assisting the group (who had, in fact, been leading them astray), turned on them. During the battle, quick-witted Jin-e managed to escape. It was discovered that Ilmara was not after the Crimson 8 Heroes, but instead only hunted Jin-e, the one who had murdered her in one swift move, and then had continued to stab her repeatedly just to hide his expertise. The detective escaped as well, just narrowly, as Vash leapt magnificently across the field in an attempt to catch her before she got away. For a brief moment, Ilmara gave chase after Jin-e, able to sense her assassin's presence, but then it was gone. At first, the group assumed he had disappeared to another realm, but they learned that a revenant such as Ilmara should be able to track her prey across realms. It seemed as though Jin-e was being protected by a powerful force.
Jin-e, though none knew it at the time, had been swept away to the Shadowfell by Shar, for whom he had slain the priestess. Pleased with his tribute to her, she protected him from being hunted by Ilmara, and she began the process of blessing him with a fragment of her power.
