Scope
The motivation behind building The Round Table Chronicles
My purpose is two-fold
- To make aspects of Arthurian lore and history accessible to more people, and
- To add to the long fanfiction tradition that essentially is Arthurian lore. Yeah, that's right: basically the entirety of Arthurian legends is fan fiction. It is the longest-running fan fiction series ever.
The goal of the project
I am putting this all together to keep track of the important elements I need to remember for my novel, and to allow anyone who wants to delve in to have an easy access point for learning more.
The Round Table Chronicles's Unique Selling point
- I'm pulling on elements of the Arthurian story that are not normally explored. Mordred isn't Arthur's son with his half-sister, like it was told in Post-Vulgate works, but rather his nephew and full younger brother of Gawain, born of Morgause and Lot. Agravaine eventually becomes an important player, a character that is entirely forgotten from most iterations. The reincarnation of the whole of the Round Table participants is a twist on the legend of Arthur returning to save Britain. The list goes on!
- The original tales were there to pass along values and lessons, give people entertainment while also instilling cultural norms and heros to look up to. This series focuses on that aspect of Arthurian legends, rather than the more lurid and dramatic plot lines. The characters must all examine who they are, what they have inherited, and what they can and must choose to be on their own.
- Arthurian legends are European, but many of the situations the knights had to face are very human at their core. Therefore, I have worked to bring a diverse cast into these novels, so they can demonstrate both how a good story can transcend across multiple cultures, backgrounds, and identities...and also so they can call out those same stories on their bullshit when needed.
