Folklore Themes: Thunder

At the end of the dry season, women celebrate thunder as a sign of approaching rain. In stories, it is the sound of welcome change. Thunder punctuates a transition from bad circumstances to better ones.

From Finding Old Ancestor:

I went with her to the edge of the lake. "You cannot see it behind the hills," she said to me, "but I can feel it coming. Listen."

I closed my eyes. I heard the same nighttime sounds that you all know, but there was something else. A low and dark rumbling, faint because of its distance, but I knew it. Thunder, the promise of rain.
