The Stone Forest

The Stone forest is located about 12 miles northwest of Vantage , in the foothills of the Ryopytav mountains.   Visitors to the stone forest notice that the profusion of stone tree trunks and stumps remind them of hillsides after a wildfire has passed through, or a the base of a hillside after an avalanche. The stones are obviously tree trunks and branches, yet the are undoubtably stone. In fact, a nearby village has an entire industry of making beads and other jewelry out of the stone trees.   The Stone Forest looms large in local stories. More recent accounts tell of encounters with human-sized Jackalopes, wearing strange clothing and carrying weapons. Miners in Vantage refuse to prospect around the Stone Forest for fear of disturbing the "Korreds," who are supposedly offended by the sound of mining. Several older legends feature lords or ladies similar to the elves of old, yet imbued with a sense of wild magic, of a time before human ken. Hunting parties seeking mortals to chase, bored Ladies looking for a mortal diversion, mischievious underlings looking for a cheap laugh at mortals' expense - all these themes run through the tales told about this lonely place.   Residents of the immediate area celebrate the seasonal solstices with desperate energy. Bonfires here are bigger, offerings to the gods are more lavish. Winter decorations are profuse with holly and rosemary. Summer decorations feature an avalanch of roses and mint. In fact, the area supports seveal farms dedicated soley to the cultivation of seasonal decorative plants. Wandering the Stone Forest during these holidays reveal a wonderland of candles, bonfires, and floral decoations. It is truely a sight to behold!   If you visit, locals will advise you to stay inside on moonless nights. Be aware that the rate to rent a room at an inn will be doubled on these nights, though no soul will deny you a place to sleep on the floor.
