Clockwork City of Nexis
Nexis is the epitome of order in the Multiverse. Its appearance is that of a great citadel of cogs, gears, and glass, forming gargantuan rings that twist around and nest within each other like an impossibly complex orrery. The very existence of this realm is defined by the faultless precision of its symmetry, where every mechanism interlocks flawlessly with the next. Long ago, Nexis served as a staging ground for the gods to design the Nine Realms, where the divine pattern of the Golden Ratio was first developed and implemented into reality as a gift from the plane’s original inhabitants.
As its name suggests, Nexis is a fixed intersection in the cosmos, an axis from which the harmonic vibrations of the Multiverse emanate. Hidden within the tallest tower of the city’s innermost ward, there lies a sanctum housing the Continuum — one of the most dangerous devices in the Nine Realms. Sometimes referred to as the Wheel of Time, this extraordinary machine is a paradigm of mathematical precision — an eternal equation capable of predicting the outcome of any event. For reasons unknown to even its creators, however, its accuracy has begun to lessen in recent centuries.
Additionally, a number of semidivine beings populate Nexis, the actions of which are driven by an unwavering sense of cosmic duty that defies mortal comprehension. The highest among these beings is an amorphous class of creatures known as aeons, who are revered as both creators and sustainers of Nexis. Lawful and utterly inscrutable to mortals, they are the architects of the entire plane, crafting it and all of its citizens with meticulous intention. Though they seek to uphold their vision of perfection, they still show consideration for the parts of the natural order that exist beyond their control.
Ever since the Syzygy, chaos has run rampant across the planes, like weeds in a neglected garden; so the aeons, at the behest of the Continuum, forged the most ingenious of their creations: the axiomites. Despite appearing humanoid at first glance, these beings are living embodiments of law itself, tirelessly walking the corridors of Nexis as they help their creators maintain the balance of their realm. And the axiomites, in-turn, created assistants of their own: the inevitables, powerful machines designed and dedicated to combat the forces of chaos wherever (and whenever) they may arise.
