The Martians

The Red War, Race

Created by ArBee, edited by Fiorinda
The Martians are alien in every sense of the word. Their mindset is all but unthinkable to us and their form is that from a mad man's nightmare.   After a civil war devastated their home planet, turning it into the red wasteland we know it as, one of the surviving Martian factions looked to Earth as a new home for its people. Their initial attempts of conquest would have been swift if the remnants of the other Martian faction hadn't intervened, disrupting the attack and giving humanity the precious time it needed to adapt to this new threat.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Martain skin is rubbery in nature, ranging from tightly fitting to almost exaggeratedly loose. There does not appear to be any link between skin and age, station or physical and mental abilities. The hues cover a range of blues, purples and greens and are coated in a thick, dripping layer of slime coloured to clash with the skin hue.   The head of a Martian is little more than a pseudopod with a large watery eye protruding from its end, unblinking with a mercury pupil and no iris.   Much like the prime apes of Earth, a Martian has an arm attached at each shoulder. Long and gaunt, there appears little flesh on the arms and the skin wraps around the bone structure which, again, resembles the prime apes of Earth. Each hangs low to the ground and ends in three fingers with no bone structure, acting like short tentacles and offering a surprising amount of dexterous manipulation.
At the center of the chest, two smaller arms are connected and fold away. Similarly gaunt to the Martians' primary arms, these instead end in two fingers each housing five double joints. Between the arms rests a ring of tentacles ranging in size from thick and ropy to slender and elongated.
Housed within the ring of tentacles is a toothed sucker much likes those of Earth's octopodes. The teeth are needle like and each is attached to its own muscular knot, allowing for individual movements. Rather than consume lumps of matter, the Martian's mouth is designed to attach to a meal source and extract all fluids.   The abdomen is low to the ground, giving the Martian squat legs. The legs are flabby with no clear distinction between leg and foot save for a slight widening of the flesh. This give the Martians a wobbling almost slithering gait.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Martians lack a gender and thus has no impact on their social standing or traditions.

Average Technological Level

Martians have mastered fusion based technology and make ample use of fission based technology, though their proficiency with the latter was severely reduced due to their civil war, or else it is an emerging technology. Transdimentional technology is also a familiar science to the Martians, though lacking the same development their Fusion and even Fission technology, putting them more on par with Humanities level in this area.   Martians make ample use of Force Fields, with their potency almost directly linked to the size of the housing. The Martian Fortresses boast the most sophisticated and layered fields, with standing prolonged barrages from the heaviest artillery as yet available to humanity. Where as the personal fields effectiveness is limited to small arms fire and some limited explosive resistance. Offensively, Martians favor the pin point accuracy of Ray weaponry. Their dreaded Heat Rays can punch through three inches of steel with a single lance and cook anything on the other side. Arrays are utilised on the larger was machines to make quick work of any heavy armour fielded against Martain Forces, hitting the same two inch wide space multiple times in rapid succession.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Martians communicate telepathically over short distances. This can allow them to communicate with humans, but humanity is poorly equipped to handle the mental strain, causing sever head aches and even death with prolonged exposure. Rather than words, they communicate with complex weaving of emotions with the meaning changing based on the context, familiarity between recipients as well as minor elements such as the weather and time of day. Martians are thus born with the ability to communicate in this manner fluently, though more complex information can be shared in shorter spans of time as the Martian ages and develops its abilities.   Writing is rarely used in Martian society. A form of pictorial language is used to convey vary basic information visually but in the rare instance Martians use writing it is instead in a form of tactile braille incorporating both that shape and material used to record the information on.

Common Dress Code

Martians neither dress nor adorn themselves with any form of jewelry. Any weapons or devices utilised by a Martian are carried in one or more of its hands, having no concept of carrying such items on a belt, in a back pack or the likes.

This is pretty cool. The detailed description of the Martians make it easy for me to imagine them. Is there a way for them to communicate with humans outside of telepathy since it harms the humans? Do they have a desire to do so?

Thanks for the comment, glad you like the description. This faction of Martians have no interest in humanity beyond wiping them out. So they dont want to talk to them or care that doing so is harmful (unless thats the plan). The other factions did have ways. Genetic alteration of humans specifically bred to aid in communicating being the most successful. Still basic information, but not lethal. More on that to come.

WWW The Martian truly does feel alien and not just a reskinned human. Also the inclusion of how the genetics effects society was a nice touch EBI If the martians don't write they would need another way to have recorded knowledge in order to preserve technology and such. This could be a hive mind like system or something possibly. Also I assume there is slmeway for them to survive our planet (tech or genetic adaptation)

Thanks for the comment, glad to hear they have their own flavour. Yes they have a hive mind, I havent worked out the full details on it yet (how far its effective, maximum number connected at a time, if theres a sort of greater brain that holds all the info) Currently they have great structures that work as habitats for them to survive long term. Short term they can survive for a time in Earths atmosphere and they are working on genetic adaptation but its incremental,

Suggestion: In the very beginning you are saying that they think differently than us (I guess humans). I am no writer but the rule of thumb is "show don't tell" I would think of how you can talk about this without actually telling.   Question: If they have no genders how do they reproduce?

Asexually or budding or they're hermaphrodites I guess

Hey thanks for the comment. Yea its a rooky mistake to tell dont show, but Im not sure how to put their alien way of thinking forward without it seeming forced like 'Hey their weird, see?'. Also, how do you represent an alien mindset when Im limited by a human mindset?

Oh and they reproduce in an artificial manner. Once it was more natural but millennia of genetic tinkering have made it a necessity, now unable to reproduce naturally. In short, they each take a chunk of themselves thats comes away similarly to asexual reproduction and combine it with anothers chunk which is put in a artificial chrysalis to mature and form into a whole being. The genetics are altered in the process for what ever desired effect the Martians require, though they cant just make sweeping changes the generics need to be altered slowly over time.

Good points, I guess in the terms of perspective, you invent it. it's like taking a role and adhearing to your set standards/assumptions. - Reproduction wise - Quite damn cool!

If the point of conquering earth is for a new home world, they could probably build artificial habitats that could simulate their natural environment more easily than they could fight humans for earth. Earth itself probably wouldn't be their cup of tea anyway with its higher gravity and what ever other differences might exist between earth and pre war Mars. I'd like to suggest a great science and sci fi youtube channel called science and futurism with Issac Arthur, one thing he stresses is rotating cylindrical habitats can give you way more living area than Terraforming a planet can, and its a lot easier. However given the description of the martians attitude I think they'd probably just attack us to eliminate the competition.
