Twisted Mana Condition in The Realms | World Anvil

Twisted Mana

A condition that appeared post-Convergence that is the result of the mana lines being rent and twisted, that results in the person's mana both destroying and healing their body.
It is a curious thing, this condition. It cannot get worse without effort, but it will hamper you for the rest of your life. Never will you be able to manipulate mana without pain, every movement hurts as your body naturally tries to heal the damage, but something prevents it. How curious indeed.
In the aftermath of the Convergence, most of those who used mana regularly, such as the Magus, were afflicted by what would become known as Twisted Mana. Twisted Mana was caused by the mana lines that ran through the body being twisted and rent apart. For anyone with a high level of mana, trained or natural, this all but spelled death to their use of mana. When mana flows through the damaged lines, there is a curious effect in that the mana both heals the lines as expected, but the damage also returns once the mana has passed through the lines.
You may not die from it, but it may spell your death by making you weak at the wrong moment. And should you have children, they will be afflicted with it as well, if not as bad. In all ways, it is a curse.
Twisted Mana first appeared during the Convergence, but has been passed down through family lines for generations. As a result, it is rather wide spread, as in the Negavation that deals with its effects. Thankfully, with each generation, the severity of the damage and the pain caused is lessened, unless one of the parents were afflicted by Mana Delirium, which increases the parent's condition and transmits to the child as well.   While Negavation lessens the impact of Twisted Mana, a recent discovery in the Mushroom Forest of Jyay has lead to what healers hope will be a cure. The tests show that the cure appears to untwist the mana lines and bridge the rent ones, while those tested report a massive decrease in pain.
