Underdark

Summary

The Underdark is the vast network of underground caverns and tunnels underneath the surface of Sorus.

It is home to the Drow, the Deep Gnome , the Duergar and many more monstrosities of the depths. The Underdark is divided into 3 layers:

The Upperdark

The first 5 kilometers below the surface. This layer is mostly empty, acting as a buffer between the surface and what lies below.

The Middledark

Located 5 to 15 kilometers below the surface, this layer is where most of the Underdark cities are located.

The Lowerdark

15 kilometers or more below the surface, even those who live in the Middledark dare not venture in the Lowerdark.

Travel

The Underdark's environment varies vastly from the surface world, making adventuring through it a dangerous expedition. Just like trekking through a desert, anyone traversing the Underdark's passages needs to be well prepared. The Underdark is mainly without any source of light save for the occasional luminous rocks or fungi. There are however varying amounts of Raw Red Crystals and Raw Blue Crystals that provide additional light. These crystals seem to be found in clusters, and specific colors can be found at varying depths (for example Raw Red Crystals are more common in the Upperdark).

Large portions of the Underdark is also without food or water, making well-stocked food supplies a must-have when exploring uncharted terrain underground. Lack of light combined with a tomb-like silence makes traveling here an activity only fit for the strong-hearted. The nerve-wracking silence could make even experienced adventurers grow agitated after a few hours.

Just like deep dungeons, the air can grow stale and even poisonous in the Underdark. It can contain explosive gases from underground volcanic activity. Bad air and poisonous fumes can collect in portions of tunnels and caves more or less isolated from the main vaults and caverns. The lower depths of the Underdark can also have very unpredictable and volatile volcanic activity.
