Grand Priestess Azaur Character in The Realms Beyond | World Anvil

Grand Priestess Azaur

Azaur, the first priestess of the temples of Azaur in Winter, was of Siren and Unicorn blood, and born in Atlantis in the cities' youth. She learned to wild dream walk very young, and was more skilled even than much of her family. As grandchild of King Helliphae, Azaur had access to the best possible training of various magics of Winter. The lady learned how to enter people's dreams and alter them with consent, as a painter might offer nature's beauty on a canvas, or show her ability to 'see' the heart of a dream as a highly-skilled sculptor might with a block of marble.   While not the first to heal minds with Dream magic, she was the most well known, and the first to offer her skill across the Realms, rather than typically only Winter Realm. Azaur was instrumental in creating a manner of Dreamwalking that was safer than the wild ancient ways for younger Faeries to study, and thus, opening the skill to more Faeries to learn. With this, and her teaching, she was able to heal thousands of Fae whose minds were harmed terribly by the Voidborn.

King Ealoran and Generel Ananun, wanted to use this power as a weapon. Azaur attempted to refuse, claiming it tainted the true purpose of Dreamweaving. She truly believed it should only be used to heal, and felt it could unbalance Winter Realm to be used as a weapon. For a time, her greater political prowess kept Dreamweaving only for healing, but this ambition to push the Winter Realm to a martial place rather than the seat of Dreaming power, could not be forestalled eternally.

When Azaur retired after forming the Temple of Dreams, and leading it as the Matriarch of Dreams for a time, it was renamed the Temple of Azaur after her. Those that followed Azaur deemed themselves priests and priestesses, naming the renaming the leader of the temple that of Grand Priestess. Centuries after Azaur lost the political debate of the use of Dreamweaving for weaponry, General Ananun formed the Nightmares with the help of some of her students. Eventually, Azaur left Winter Realm for Summer, and then eventually departed Faerie all together for the human realm. If she is still alive, it is unknown. Though, most faerie believe the grand lady faded.
