Evershade Forest
Geography
Northeastern Etias, bordering the Howlpire Mountains. Evershade is a vast, ancient woodland of towering, gnarled trees with massive root systems and interwoven canopies that plunge the forest floor into perpetual twilight. The terrain is uneven—riddled with natural ravines, fog-choked glens, moss-covered boulders, and crumbling ruins. Hidden freshwater springs feed silent pools and slow-moving streams, many of which are believed to be sanctified or cursed depending on the phase of the moon. There is no coastline or direct oceanic access, though the forest draws in moisture from distant sea winds, resulting in near-constant mist.
Ecosystem
The Evershade ecosystem is governed by symbiotic magical resonance, not just biological processes. Plants, beasts, and spirits coexist in a delicate balance, their survival linked to the forest’s emotional and metaphysical mood. Certain flora bloom only in response to spiritual energy or bloodshed. Predators and prey shift roles depending on season and Veil alignment. Spirits, animals, and enchanted plants often form interconnected behaviors—like Shadefoxes who follow Moonstags to scavenge from their path or Whisperroot vines that bloom only when wraiths pass.
Ecosystem Cycles
Rather than four distinct seasons, Evershade responds to the Veil’s fluctuations, including:
- Gloaming Rise – A period of increased spirit activity; most creatures breed or bloom during this phase.
- Stillfade – A spiritually silent season where most beings enter torpor; danger increases.
- Lanternbloom – Rare, short-lived season when the dead are nearest to the living and the glades become visible.
- Moonfall – A volatile time when shadowbeasts hunt in large numbers and the forest reclaims paths and relics.
Many animals hibernate in spectral dens or undergo magical camouflage during Stillfade. Wraithkeepers migrate deeper into the forest during Moonfall, becoming more aggressive.
Localized Phenomena
Path Drift – Trails that physically rearrange in response to intent, emotion, or spiritual resonance.
Echo Whispers – Faint voices heard in wind currents, often guiding—or deceiving—travelers.
Mist Veins – Patches of thick fog that act as semi-sentient thresholds, transporting individuals to sacred sites or outside the forest entirely.
Glade Phasing – Hidden shrines and glades that appear only during specific lunar alignments or emotional states.
Spirit Lanterns – Floating lights that drift through the forest canopy; sometimes guiding souls, other times luring the living astray.
Climate
Perpetually cool and damp. The sun rarely pierces the dense canopy, resulting in constant twilight. Rainfall is frequent but soft, often accompanied by glowing spores or translucent fog. Thunderstorms are rare but dangerous, often warping the forest’s metaphysical structure when they occur. Temperatures range from 45–60°F most of the year.
Fauna & Flora
Flora:
- Shadowleaf: Black-veined plant that only grows in moonlight.
- Whisperroot: Used in necromantic tonics; blooms near grave sites.
- Glowcap Mushrooms: Bioluminescent fungi marking ancient paths.
- Thornlace Vines: Move in response to sound; can strangle or protect.
Fauna:
- Moonstags: Elusive creatures with silver antlers, seen as omens.
- Shadefoxes: Intelligent, mischievous animals capable of vanishing.
- Shadowbeasts: Predators born of corrupted Veil magic.
- Wraithkeepers: Spectral guardians of sacred glades.
- Mistcrows: Omen-bearing birds that speak in mimicry and riddle.
Natural Resources
- Rare herbs and plants used in alchemy, healing, or necromancy
- Spirit-infused wood (used in wandcraft and ritual tools)
- Residual Veil-thread energy (harvested carefully by druids or necromancers)
- Crystals and bone relics buried deep within glade altars
Extraction is perilous and often punished by the forest itself or its guardians.
History
Evershade predates known civilization. Believed to be a fragment of the original world untouched by the Sundering, it housed deities of balance and ancient mortal kingdoms now lost. The rebellion saw human resistance forces take refuge within its depths, and legends say Melina Dawnshade was once blessed here. Rituals of burial, sacrifice, and rebirth have been practiced in its glades for millennia. Many necromantic scholars believe the forest holds one of the original Veil fractures.
Tourism
Mystics, necromancers, and scholars of the Eternal Cycle are the most common visitors.
- Druids come for communion and guidance, often seeking specific glades.
- Necromancers travel to commune with spirits or to attempt risky rituals.
- Adventurers and pilgrims are drawn by legends of ancient power, hidden altars, or spiritual cleansing.
Accommodations are minimal—most visitors either camp under protective enchantments or seek shelter in druidic encampments near the forest edge. The most daring seek sanctuary within the Veilspire Glade, but few are welcomed more than once.
