Magic Schools

Abjuration: Abjurers practice the most defensive form of all magic. These spells mainly protect an individual or location from physical or magical effects and can inhibit the ability of others to carry out any unwanted action. Usually this is achieved by dissolving the forces of magic. Many of these spells have overlap with many other areas of magic as they are responsible for denying the functions of others and each spell is created specifically to negatively affect the action or perpetrator on some level.   Conjuration: Conjuration is the practice of turning available energy into matter. When one conjures, they are tapping into the energies around them so as to achieve the creation of previously nonexistent items. This is the key difference between itself and transmutation. This can also be described as altering the fabric of reality. A useful frame of reference when making portals is your goal.   Divination: Practicing divination invades, on some level, the privacy and secrecy of others. To see into one's future is also the practice of divination. Those who consider magic as science, say it is likely seeing into the future taps into the probability waves of the multiverse and thus the complex interactions between them is what results in the unreliability of such forewarnings.   Enchantment: Enchantment is the general application of magic to an item or being. This school allows an item to mimic the other abilities of magic or to mimic the sentience of living things. The variety seen within this school is similar to abjuration and the practices are surprisingly similar in cognitive awareness required by spellcasters. Being able to fight against an enchanter's ways likely requires a similar awareness.   Evocation: Where abjuration seeks to protect evocation is used to harm. But while other schools create physical forms, evocation is more effectively described by its temporary presence of energy. If one were to cast a bolt of flame for example, the energy would be present only for a few moments as contrasted by the consistency of schools like conjuration.   Illusion: Casters of illusion spells use energy similarly to that of abjuration but in a consistent manner more associated with conjuration. This school can create tricks which make false matter or convince those under its effects of something untrue. Casting these spells are often considered by mages as a mixture of conjuration and evocation.   Necromancy: This school practices using soul energy to effect the world around them, or to take energy from other sources so as to affect the power of a soul. Often considered a negative form of magic, these spells interfere with the natural status of life and death, and can create disturbances in any condition. A smaller portion often considered in the same field is to turn corpses and other remains into a form of servant. This is disputed by some scholars to be form of enchantment but is usually disqualified as it is changing the state of a once living form in comparison to a non-sentient item.   Transmutation: Changing the physical form of one object into another is transmutation. This school can be confused for conjuration or evocation, but just as necromancy takes already present energy, transmutation takes mass which was already present and uses energy around the caster and item in order to facilitate physical changes which are often permanent. Scientific study considers this as chemical, molecular, or even sub-molecular changes within a given portion of matter.

Purpose

This article is an assembled collection used to inform recruits about the theoretical separations of the different, "magical schools". By the end of this article, one should understand the broad application of any school within.

Document Structure

Caveats

Note: Reference to the manipulation of existence as, "magic", or, "science", is used as shorthand, and was specifically taken from texts which include these, as they happen to be the most common forms of reference among dimensions in the Reality Grid. Also note that, "specialty schools", such as, "Technomancy", and, "Theurgy", have been purposefully omitted for the general consensus in relevant communities of them being more combinations of those presented, than their own schools.
