Eels of Fire

Big. Scary. Eel-y. That pretty much sums up the eels of fire. Oh, and also: they live in pure lava.

Found only in The Great Chasm, a lava-filled trench separating Nhaie's two hemispheres, the eels of fire live mostly under the radar. Traditional stories of the area tell of dragons with obsidian claws that reach out from the lava and snatch visitors. These tales are mostly false, but find some truth in the existence of the Eels of Fire.

Anatomy

Long, with sturdy jaws and scales seemingly made of rock, the Eels of Fire are not unlike Earth's Moray Eels, simply much larger and adapted to live in... lava. About 15 feet around and 87 yards long, the fire eels (as they are most commonly referred to) are menacing creatures, though one can never see their entirety due to their tendency to swim in the GCH's lava (this is what they can most often be found doing). Remaining under-lava and breathing through thin tubes that extend to the surface, these beasts typically spend their time in extremely low-elevation, lava-filled sinkholes branching off the GCH.

Feeding

The eels' diet is composed mainly of Boiling Moss, a type of moss that grows in the GCH, just above the surface of the lava. Every once in a while, the eels' mouths pop up out of the lava to munch on the rippling moss. This is rarely sighted by humans, however, as visitors don't commonly venture close enough to the edge of the chasm to see inside it. Fire eels also eat rocks every once in a while, in order to acquire the necessary minerals to grow their tough scales. Their many teeth seem to be just for the purpose of grinding rocks - their dull edges are great at mashing. It seems they grab moss not with sharp teeth but with strong tongues. These beasts, contrary to beliefs established in the area's legends, can rarely (if ever) be found snatching people from above the Chasm. There are no trustworthy records of this ever occurring.
