Lucinda's Watch-house

"Thanks for getting me off that island."   "You're welcome. You look troubled. What's wrong?"   (...)   "Where do I stay the night?"   "I have a house in Castover Island, and a spare room. You can stay there."
— Dialogue between Old Lady Lucinda and Purpure in Squire of the Sea.
Lucinda's Watch-house is built on a hill overlooking the sea.

Purpose / Function

To shelter the Lightkeeper when she performed her ritual duty of showing the way to ships returning to the island.   In later years, it became her main residence after she realized it would be difficult to run uphill and downhill every day.

Alterations

The people of Castover added living quarters around the lighthouse as Lucinda became elderly, so that she didn't have to walk up and down hill every day.   The living quarters in question were based on a cottage layout surrounding the lighthouse. They consist of two storeys.   The ground storey has a living room, which leads to a dining room, and a kitchen combined with scullery at the rear.   The second floor starts with a staircase landing which is used to display decorative knick knacks, and has two doors leading to bedrooms. The smaller bedroom belongs to Lucinda, and the larger room was used by her fostered children.   When Purpure was adopted by Lucinda, the latter ordered some renovations according to her new protege's tastes, gradually completing the finer touches with time.

Architecture

The cottage is built in the English Tudor style, out of stone, bricks, and half-timbers. The lighthouse itself is made of hydraulic lime with a striped granite and coral facade.

History

The Lighthouse had a brief history as a communal light tower until Lucinda's sudden arrival on Castover's shores in 1798.   After a brief period when the Lighthouse wasn't in use, Lucinda ended up taking over its maintenance for most of her adult years.
