It was a strangely common sentiment whenever Purpure mentioned who her foster mother was, especially if she got in trouble while training. Though Lucinda had mentioned she was a local leader of sorts, Purpure wasn't sure the bowing and scraping made much sense. There must be something more.
Qualifications
To become a lightkeeper, the person must have shown an aptitude for leadership and social betterment of others.
Appointment
The first Lightkeeper was informally conducted when the islanders all decided to call her that.
Duties
The Lightkeeper is supposed to guide young people as if they were their own children and grandchildren.
Responsibilities
In daily life the Lightkeeper keeps their lighthouse running, as well as look after whichever youth has been currently entrusted to their care.
They would also occasionally help other citizens with their household chores like cooking, laundry, and cleaning.
Benefits
The Lightkeeper is respected by the islanders, and can obtain material favors. The current one managed to get a house with fancy conveniences such as running water.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
If the Lightkeeper went insane and is proven so, they can be dismissed without any appeals by the current pirate leader.
History
Before Lucinda arrived on the lost shores of Castover, there were no lightkeepers to unite the roving bands of islanders properly.
There had been attempts to create a community leader, but few were successful.

Among the pirates, the Lightkeeper is a symbol of their independence and success in a world that never accepted them.

Lucinda Longstride was the first and current holder of the title, due to her propensity to looking after children and guiding them to make something of themselves.
