Flamekeep

Flamekeep is the largest metropolis in Thrane, with a population of 800,000. However, nearly half of the 2.3 million people of Thrane live within the immediate region of the city. The city is the religious and political heart of the nation as well as the population center. In 229 YK when Tira Miron became one with the Silver Flame and slew the Archfiend, Flamekeep was built around the silver pillar of flame, and the cathedral later built from the keep. The city eventually grew around the holy site.

Overview

The Keeper of the Flame, Jaela Daran, ostensibly rules from here. The Council of Cardinals as well as the Ministry, in practical terms, runs the country from the city, though they are in fact subservient to the Keeper of the Flame; she seems primarily interested in spiritual rather than secular matters though. High Cardinal Leroche, in particular, has taken most of the secular administration of the nation into his purview and largely treats Thrane as his personal kingdom.

Geography

Flamekeep resides on a island that rests in an inlet in the Thrane River. Three bridges connect the island city to the surrounding land. To the north, the Scion Bridge, to the east, Tira's Bridge, and to the south, the Bridge of Flint. Flamekeep is made up of densely built buildings, nearly all at least 4 stories tall, built on streets radiating out like ripples surrounding the central Cathedral of the Silver Flame. The cathedral is a massive, gothic cathedral made of at least 20 spires. Its main spire stands just over 500 ft high, nearly piercing any clouds that hang over the city. An aura radiates around the cathedral, a pale, silver light. From the main spire, a pillar of white silver flames lights up the sky, shooting up into the clouds.   Among the tall and tightly connected buildings, construction can be both heard and seen on a daily basis as the city undergoes expansion and reconstruction in the popular neo-gothic style. The city has now grown out past the island to the land surrounding, though the city outside of the historic island center are more large shanty towns and cheap residential housing than a real continuation of the city itself.
