Griswold Wygarthe

Paraclete of Mineos Griswold Wygarthe

Griswold is the paraclete of Mineos. The youngest paraclete in Church history, he has a hefty burden upon his shoulders. He received the position of paraclete after the previous paraclete learned he was a Divine Domain Warlock, his patron a Mineosian Archangel. Since he was near death, on a whim the previous paraclete fostered Griswold to take over. Though the election of paracletes are usually up to the elders of the specific branch, the spot light placed upon Griswold made it hard not to choose him. At only 18, Griswold was now in charge of law and security of his nation.   At the age of 23, he launched a popular crusade of reclamation. The crusade is now struggling to claim Tumult (6 years since the start of the Crusade), though Vincent met an interesting fellow claiming to be the lost prince of Tumult who offered a potential alliance. He had to retreat from Dusk, regrouping on the northern Tumult border. He needed a victory, so he redirected his efforts to the East into the Ten Thousand Lakes Region, hoping to the take the city of Contact. The war there was lackluster, neither side really giving their all. Morale was low, and the crusade fizzled out. Griswold was able to install a governor into Contact, but the years would prove this an empty claim. Contact remained as independent as ever.   Griswold spent the next several decades fortifying the claims he had already made. He feared retaliation from Tumult under Bedrich, but that never came. His war became one of the soul, as he struggled with Pelorians and Summer worshipping halflings. After a couple decades, he joined forces with Lo, as the Bloodmist was still spreading. But his strength was fading, and by the start of the Eternal Invasion, there were calls for a new Mineosian paraclete.

Mental characteristics

Accomplishments & Achievements

His crusade has seen far more success than the first Mineosian Crusade that started the Veritian Dark Ages. This not only makes him a popular paraclete, but also loads on more pressure and responsibility to succeed.

Failures & Embarrassments

His fleeing Asmodeus during the Battle for Dusk is one of his great failures. He is still recovering from both the shame of running, and the fact that Neih itself supported Tumult. The crusade is halted on the borders of Tumult, possibly halting their advance on this front until a future crusade.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

He aims to reclaim the old territories of the Church, reunifying the Veritian Leaf under the banner of the Church of Veritas. He thus leads the Second Mineosian Crusade. He also hopes to please his patron the archangel Azrael of the plane of Mineos.

Social

Contacts & Relations

He knew the new king of Tumult, King Lairus the Bastard, but their relationship was tense at best. Lairus saw him as a coward, while Griswold distrusted the vapid connections of the Sovereign Peoples of Neih.

Religious Views

Griswold is a follower of the Mineos branch of the Church of Veritas. Law, order and justice are the tenets of his faith, and he pursues righteousness single-mindedly. His religious views do make him ethnocentric though, seeing his people of the Church as righteous and those who resist the church as heretics and pagans. His battles in Tumult have got him to question his fundamentalism.
