Giff Whalers

The Giff whalers are a group of hippo people sky pirates who fly biplanes in their pursuit of whale blubber. They hunt the flying whales that serve as an important transportation system throughout the Droplets of Turm. This is an illegal and highly frowned upon trade, and the authorities world over try to crack down on these Giff. But these pirates hold the secret to their planes close to the chest, and none have been able to reverse engineer them despite efforts. And thanks to corruption and built in systems, the trade of blubber cannot be eradicated completely. The Giff, settling their airfields and bases throughout the Outer Isles Region and Ul Salvation, have created a influential cartel.
The Giff of Turm were always a xenophobic people. Coming from a region near the Marids, they kept mostly to their own kind despite the occasional trade. They had a golden as a species when they developed the first firearms on Turm, but they foolishly shared their invention with the other fishfolk. This did not lead to the death of their civilization or anything tragic like that. It was truly a profitable relationship. But, the other fishfolk garnered much strength and power from the weapons, so since then the Giff have kept their innovative marvels (such as flight) to themselves.
The reason they began whaling was a mix between the need for a new income source and spite against the Marids. They've got beef.

History

In 1570, a struggle started between the Giff Consortium and the Gis Revenus Gojira crime syndicate after some whalers attacked the whale they were on. The Gis Revenus retaliated with zeal, employing a tribe of Kua-toa to attack their base of operations on Misery Bay, killing all by one Giff who escaped with a biplane. After this, in Watertown, the Gis Revenus committed a terrorist act in the OITC district, killing 6, using a Giff grenade. They convinced the officials investigating that this was a Giff attack, with snowballed into a bigger conflict. Thus, the two crime organizations have been at each others throat since.
