Werewolves

Though most of the magic was destroyed in the magic war, some remained. It infected the soldiers that survived the seige of Ceary Fortress, and they went mad with it, transforming into monsters on any night that made them reminiscent of the the battle.
--Wolves and Serpents, by Isabel Ruzsa
Werewolf legends are older than Svene, or at least older than our history on Svene, so I wouldn't blame you if told me there's no such thing as werewolves. And you would be mostly right. Though they do still sometimes refer to themselves as Werewolves, the Werewolves of Svene are nothing like the stories.

Training

Werewolf children start learning the art of shapeshifting at about the same age they enter school, sometimes younger, but this gift is learned entirely through study with close friends and family. The goal is that they are able to transform by adulthood, if not before that. The Werewolves consider themselves guardians of the dead, preventing souls from escaping the land of the dead and wreaking havoc on the living. As a result, they usual learn to transform into the shape of dogs or wolves, which they believe can cross over the barrier between the land of the dead and the land of the living. Some Werewolves learn to take the shape of other animals, however, and even more rarely, they learn to take the shape of multiple animals.   Once they are able to shift at will, Werewolves learn to communicate telepathically. This is first taught while the Werewolves are in animal form, as other forms of communication are more limited, but talented Werewolves also develop the ability to communicate this while while in human form.    Finally, Wereowolf training also includes mock battles in which participants try to draw blood or cause pain. The endurance of pain is considered an important part of Werewolf tradition. Werewolves believe that those who die in pain are likely to continue to walk after death. Therefore, they train to withstand pain, to ensure that their souls will move on after they have died.

Structure and Location

Unlike many of the other magical systems, Werewolves do not live any hidden communities exclusively to them. Nor does their group have a specific structure. Werewolves live all over Svene, often as single families, or sometimes in small groups, such as several families who live in the same city. There is no assigned leader that monitors Werewolf motions, and if Werewolves come into disagreement, conflicts are often resolved through pain rituals.
