Virohaus Species in The Outer Black | World Anvil

Virohaus

Many eras ago, tales were told of a strange creature, the Virohaus. Imagine a giant horse, granted the boon of two heads and speed unknown to any other creature of the land. This strange, pseudo-mythical creature was greatly desired by the richest of Elves as mounts, wanting an accelerated method of travel up and down the enormous Spires that they lived in. Records indicate that just over a hundred of these creatures were tamed and domesticated enough to become mounts for these elites.   Sadly, these wonderous creatures were not designed to be mounts, nor were they ever supposed to be confined in such places without the ability to run wild and free. Within a handful of years, half of these creatures had perished, fallen ill and lame to stressful conditions and overworking and unable to get better or improve their health. Not wanting to waste their bounty, it is reported that one of the elites sampled the flesh of the Virohaus, and from there, the tale is history. The meat was succulent and delicious, and apparently seemed to grant the devourer improved strength and reflexes. Rapidly, the Virohaus were gathered up and slaughtered en masse to be eaten for strength and as a delicacy. This quickly led to their extinction, with this once great and noble beast being reduced in populace until no more existed to run through the depths of the Great Forests. Not used to thinking about anything but themselves, these rich elites never considered preserving the stock or keeping the race of creatures alive for future generations, and so their long distant descendants only get to mentally picture these mythical racers from written accord, never able to see the true majesty of them in stride, chasing one another across open plains and into the rooted forest.
