Caleb's Last Letter

A letter written by Caleb Puff to Granny Brooks a few days before he sailed off to the Moon, long before Granny Brooks was a grandmother, or even a mother yet. This letter is something that only Daedelus, Lancelot and Granny Brooks herself have read, and are the only words ever given to the boys from their Father and the last words to Granny Brooks her husband ever gave. Caleb left this letter on the table in their small home in the High Elven Spire after Brooks had gone to work before boarding one of the Sloops along with his fellow guardsmen. Importantly, and heartbreakingly, Caleb was not aware that Granny Brooks was pregnant and never got to know of his two children, nor the great heights they would reach.

Purpose

Caleb wrote this letter to Brooks to answer a question she had asked him that night. Knowing she was pregnant, she asked him what he would want his children to be, and what he thinks they should aspire to. He couldn't answer her directly, but after Brooks fell asleep, got up to pen this response, writing between shifts until finishing it just before leaving for the Moon.

History

This letter, the only form of fatherly voice that Daedelus and Lancelot ever heard, was what drove them to work so hard on Layman's Belt, bringing it from the wreckage of rock it was after the Ark Eventto the thriving floating home for the Eligni it is today. It also helped Granny Brooks continue without her husband. His words, though the only part of him she had left, continued to bring her happiness and love, ensuring she kept on the right path and made the right decisions, raising the two boys just as Caleb would have wanted. Though his death crushed her, his words held her heart together enough to be a central part of the development of Caleb's Rest and Layman's Belt, knowing that wherever his soul was would be looking down in pride.
