The Fall of Lunis and The Terminus Crisis

The all-encompassing civilization of Lunis was ultimately undone by the hubris of its ruling Tyrants and the entropic influence of The Terminus Nocta, culminating in an unnatural disaster of unimaginable proportions. Five hundred years after The Absolute read the Ever-Scrolls and spoke Lunis into being, His influence began to wane. The view of the ruling classes, The Tyrants, Archons, and Notari, shifted from reverent servitude to the bitter opinion that their master had abandoned them, and eventually to the view that He was no longer necessary and that Lunis must necessarily evolve without Him.   A period of oppression began, in which the ruling classes fueled their increasing thirst for opulence by taxing The People of the Fields, the Skunlynn. Their view was that Lunis' supremacy and beauty should be elevated and that the burden of this elevation would rest on the backs of the laborers, who remained fiercely loyal to The Absolute.   Surprisingly, The Absolute broke His long-held silence to intervene in this matter, sending a peaceful but powerful force of angels to restore agency to the Skunlynn. But this only fermented rebellion among the ruling classes who wondered why their leader had returned only to chastise them. Finally, the Tyrant known as The Brute, keeper of The Ever Forge, defied The Absolute for a second time, using Skunlynn slaves to build a castle of black stone. Once again, The Absolute intervened, this time capturing The Brute and imprisoning him in the labyrinth citadel, Skull Kyth. When the Tyrant of Justice led a force to rescue his comrade, all-out war broke out between The Absolute and The Tyrants, with the Skunlynn fighting on the former's side. The people of The Fields were slaughtered mercilessly.   The pain and misery of this political chaos and the genocide of The Skunlynn proved the catalyst for Terminus Nocta's influence, which spread across Lunis like a tsunami. The nature of The Ultimate Night is stagnation and chaos, an upending of the natural order, a perversion the heart of creation. Blood storms swept across the land. Acres of woodland bent beneath the weight of abominating winds. Animals became aberrations. Aberrations became titan thralls. This was a war The Tyrants could not win. Within a year Lunis had fallen.   Although Lunis was only a demi-plane of the Upper Penumbra, it's fall might have spelled the end of The Orphan World as a whole. The death of the Absolute, the slaughter of so many innocents, and the pall cast from five-hundred years of senseless decadence, profoundly altered The Orphan's consciousness, wearying it, goading it towards nihilism, polluting its halls and doorways.     As it were, The Star Shepherds intervened and there came a great exodus down one of the runeways. It changed the face of Terrestria and began the Age of Exiles, which is now in its three thousandth year. But that is a tale for another entry in this chronicle.
