Necromunda

Necromunda is a canon planet, detailed here on Lexicanum. This article provides additional fanon details and history.   Necromunda is a hive world in Segmentum Solar, and a major producer of munitions for the Imperial Guard. Necromunda's forges produce lasguns, autoguns, shotguns and boltguns, among other weapons. The planet also levies huge numbers of troops for the Imperial Guard (most notably the "Necromundan Spiders"), as well as other supplies. Necromunda is typical of most hive worlds, its hive cites rife with powerful gangs.

The Imprisonment of Coatl

During the War in Heaven, the greatest servants of Mag'ladroth the Void Dragon were the Seven Serpents, self-aware war-machine intelligences created to be his armies and generals.   The Old Ones and their allies - the Young Races - were unable to destroy the Serpents, but were able to imprison them by imposing code-locks on their programming and forcing them to assume quiescent forms which were buried on planets throughout the galaxy. One of those planets was the one that would later be known as Necromunda, and the code-locked Serpent was buried deep beneath the ground.   Millions of years later, after the rise of Humanity and during the Dark Age of Technology, Necromunda was colonized and - over the millennia - extensively mined and industrialized, becoming a teeming and polluted hive world. Above the Serpent's entombment a hive accreted, its industry devoted to the smelting of ferrous metals pulled from Necromunda's crust.

The Wormspoil Hive

In the 35th millennium, an industrial accident resulted in billions and billions of tonnes of molten metal and slag spilling from the smelters, filling the galleries and domes of the hive and extruding itself over the ash wastes, coiling and cooling into a titanic tangle of solidified ore. The resulting mass resembled nothing so much as the gigantic cast of a monstrous worm, and so it became known as the wormspoil.   But no resource can be long left untapped on Necromunda; the people starve for raw materials and the Imperium hungers for manufactured goods. Before the innermost portions had even cooled, the wormspoil was settled and mined, gangs of workers delving deep into the slag and ore and extracting valuable materials. Within a few generations, a thriving settlement had been delved into the wormspoil and it became known as the Wormspoil Hive.

Geography

Necromunda is highly polluted hive world, covered in corrosive ash wastes and dotted with hundreds of "hives" (towering city structures housing millions or billions of people). The planet's original geographic features have been lost to industrial activity and pollution (especially mining and dumping of spoil).

Fauna & Flora

Necromunda is home to billions upon billions of human beings, as well as other creatures unique to hive worlds in general or Necromunda in particular (one example is the great hive spiders whose venom is used to make tarantella.) Many species have evolved to survive in the polluted ecosystem, while others have been deliberately genetically modified (even some human groups such as members of Clan Goliath). Mutation is common, with stable or semi-stable strains of abhuman differentiating themselves from baseline such as the Scalies.

Natural Resources

Necromunda's original natural resources were stripped from it millennia ago by mining and pollution. Refuse and byproducts of thousands of years of industry are now recycled to provide raw materials for planet's manufacturing industries.
