Session #24

General Summary

Ephyra lay sprawled out, breathing peacefully, healing from her wounds. Bane woke and checked on the prisoner; Spike’s bonds were secure, and the attempted murderer was stable though severely wounded with several fractured bones. As the sun rose above the rim of the world, the rest of the party stirred.

Toby washed off the dried blood on his hands and face, a sober look on his face. Nilsa and Spin shook Ephyra, and she woke up, refreshed and cheerful. Kae checked on Vanilla and fed him while Bane beckoned to Toby. The two discussed their plans for the day. The party would proceed to Ballarad, following the letter found in Spike’s jacket to meet his contact, Hester. Ephyra suggested using telepathy to read Spike’s mind to find a meeting place, and after an intense mental struggle, she pried the information out of him. She then explained that Hester and Spike were supposed to meet in a specific back alley in Ballarad.

The party all gave suggestions and ideas on how to meet up with Hester, and Kae landed on the idea of disguising himself in Spike’s jacket and outfit as a decoy, allowing the party to apprehend Hester with the distraction. Bane pointed out that Kae was too skinny and young to pass as Spike under close scrutiny, but with no other plan and with time ticking away, the party agreed on the plan.

Just as they finished packing their few belongings and gathering their weapons, the party heard crashings and running in the forest. The party raised their weapons defensively but lowered them when a messenger burst into the clearing, calling for Constable Tobeon. Toby, who had been moodily watching the group lay out plans, spoke with the messenger and then slipped some coins into his palm. The messenger shot off, and Toby turned to the party, explaining that his good friend, Dr. Breck, needed help back in Toby’s district. The town wasn’t far from Ballarad, he explained, and he agreed to meet up with them in Ballarad as soon as his town was in order. He then grabbed his pack and quarterstaff and ran after the messenger.

Ephyra glared at Toby and made a remark about how helpful it would be to split the party right before finding Lieutenant Slade. The party left the cave and passed through the forest to Ballarad, Spike in tow. Bane half dragged, half shoved Spike until the group reached Ballarad’s local jail. As they strode through the heavy door into the dimly lit warden’s office, the warden woke up from his nap and welcomed them. After asking if they’d brought someone to hang, he cheerfully agreed to keep Spike as a prisoner in his jail instead. Bane and Ephyra encouraged him to throw Spike into a cell with a “lively” inmate, and the warden promised he would.

Next, the party hurried to find the alley, the meeting with Hester drawing near. The afternoon sun had begun its descent towards the western horizon as the party found the alley. Bane threw on his invisibility cloak, and Kae heard his large friend’s muffled voice behind him. Nilsa, Spin, and Ephyra snuck through a store, waiting till the managers were distracted, and then they took a back entrance where they could see Spike but hide from view until Hester showed.

A few minutes after Kae showed up in the alley, a woman entered the alleyway from the opposite end and approached him. She gave a few words of curt greeting before seeing through Kae’s hurried disguise, and she drew her weapons. Ephyra, Spin, and Nilsa snuck up behind her while Kae stalled valiantly. Soon Hester was surrounded. A few blows later, she was soundly beaten, and the party cracked their knuckles and glared down at her, ordering her to tell where Lt. Slade was camped. Knowing she was beaten, Hester offered to take them to Slade’s camp in the forest since Slade was expecting a report from Hester. Bane divested her of her weapons and forced her to lead the party to the campsite. The sunset flamed in the west and then gave way to solemn reds and grays.

Bane wore his invisibility cloak again, holding a hidden knife to Hester’s back. The rest of the party followed from a distance, and soon Bane and Hester reached a clearing lit by campfires. As they set foot in the clearing, Hester shouted a warning, but Bane slammed the hilt of his knife against the back of her head, knocking her senseless to the ground.

A woman in full armor approached the fallen Hester, and she motioned for her three body guards to follow. Bane flung aside his invisibility cloak and drew his great sword. The rest of the party rushed to his side, swords and bows raised.

The group locked in combat, and the party found the soldiers to be particularly tough and fast. Kae was struck by a soldier’s weapon, and it ripped through his armor and left him winded but unhurt. Lt. Slade dodged most of the party’s attacks and withdrew behind her soldiers.

Not long after the battle began, Adaelia rushed out of the woods and joined the party. Ephyra called on lightning to strike Lt. Slade, but the sheen of sparks flashed and entered the earth, leaving Slade surprised but unharmed. Nilsa wounded one soldier with her axe, and Bane killed another. Having an opening in the fray, Slade drenched her sword in poison, and the members of the party narrowly dodged her attacks, the red poison hissing on the grass. The bodyguards fought as fiercely as the party, and neither side gained ground.

Meanwhile, Toby hurried back to Ballarad, not wishing to miss out on the action. He arrived in town but didn’t see any of his friends, so he swung by the warden’s office. The warden confirmed that the party had brought Spike by, but he’d not seen anything of the group afterward. Toby searched the streets, hoping to find them. Finally, Toby heard thunder from the nearby forest, and seeing lightning strikes he called four town guards over. They were reluctant to help until he showed them his constable badge and threatened to report them to the warden for bad behavior.

Back in the forest, two guards lay dead, but the party was battered. Several of them had lost armor or had been severely hurt. Kae was about mentally drained from using his nano abilities, and Slade kept unleashing powerful attacks to weaken the party and push them back towards the forest.

In the middle of the battle, Toby dashed into the clearing, bellowing at Lt. Slade to leave his friends alone. Slade turned to face him, but not before Toby’s right fist connected with her partially protected jaw, and she took the hit and slid back a foot or two. The four guards caught up with the party, but they were overpowered by the superior training of Slade’s bodyguards. Slade and her surviving bodyguards redoubled their attempts to kill the group, but the party slew the two remaining bodyguards. The party regrouped and began using abilities to heal each other. Bane, Nilsa, and Toby timed their attacks strategically against Slade, but she dodged their attacks, jumped back a step, and then touched a device at her waist, a teleporter. With a hum of energy and a flash, she vanished. In her hurry, she dropped her satchel, and the party found a copy of her plans to unleash something called the Yellow Swarm.

Toby and Kae recollected hearing about these apocalyptic insect swarms, and the party made hasty plans to teleport to various towns and cities in the area. They agreed to regroup at Northam. Kae looked closer at Slade’s plans, and he read that Slade’s soldiers were transporting and taming a Leviathan.

Toby decided to borrow Bane’s teleporter and travel to his town where Dr. Breck lived in hope that the doctor would find a solution to the swarm. The rest of the party would split up and warn the High Regent and gain Gwydeon's help.
