Session #13
General Summary
The PCs started in Curaris where Constable Reeves was recruiting guards to take a shipment to the town of Northam. Ephyra signed up first, followed by Bane and Nilsa. Ephyra and Nilsa were overjoyed at their reunion. Finally, Tobeon signed on as well and joined the band of adventurers. With a promise payment of 100 shins plus lodging in Northam, the PCs picked up their aneens (which Constable Reeves had helpfully arranged) and minding the warnings to stay on the path and beware the bandits, they began their trek to Northam.
On the first day of their journey, they encountered a group of 4 Rahenum Coursers who promptly ordered everyone to turn around and clear the path. The PCs being the hardy sorts were not ones to give up their duties so quickly, and in short order dispatched the Rahenum Coursers. Tobeon was able to harvest around 100 pounds of meat from the coursers, and the group discovered a goss cypher (essentially a tongue which repeated everything you said) which they all agreed was gross and left it on the ground.
Pushing on until the night, the PCs decided to push on and so arrive at Northam sooner. As dusk was falling, the NPC guards began to lag behind when suddenly the PCs heard scuffling sounds behind them. Turning quickly, they saw a group of bandits had overpowered the NPC guards. The leader of the bandits, a young man with a mischievous grin, introduced himself as The Hooded One, and demanded their shipment of 2000 shins.
Having been hired for this very purpose, the PCs refused and demanded the return of the NPC guards and to be allowed to pass. Impressed by their courage despite being outnumbered, The Hooded one offered the PCs a choice. They could either duel one on one with the leaders of the bandit group with the winner being allowed the shins, or fight the entire bandit troop to the death (almost assuredly of the PCs). The PCs counted the odds and chose to duel the bandit leaders! Nilsa squared off against The Hooded One himself, Ephyra faced Miriam, Tobeon put his fists up against John the Tree’s broadsword, and Bane took on Dale the Wall.
Henceforth, the forest was filled with the sound of swords ringing against armor, the shouts and groans of combatants, and the occasional crack of cyphers (or maybe that was bones breaking?) The duel flowed back and forth for a long time, and the fighters seemed evenly matched. Both sides took heavy hits, but neither side would yield. Finally, when the PCs began to doubt their own ability to survive another attack, The Hooded One yielded to Nilsa’s relentless attack. The PCs had triumphed in the duel! Being true to his word, The Hooded One allowed the group to go free, but informed them of Constable Reeve’s true nature. It turns out that the money came from guilds paying dues to the High Regent of the land who charged a modest 10% to which Constable Reeves added another 50% charge for himself.
Dismayed to learn they were helping a crooked constable, the PCs asked the bandits what they did with the money. Upon learning the bandits would use the money to help those in need, and one hamlet nearby in particular, the PCs decided to split the group. Nilsa, Bane, and Ephyra would return with the 10% actually owed to the High Regent, while Tobeon would help the bandits give aid to the hamlet. They planned to all join together later at the hamlet and give what aid they could.
