Uruk Settlement in The New Realm | World Anvil

Uruk (U-ruk)

In the Beginning…

I

n the beginning, when the folk fell from Old Earth and into the New Realm, a large proportion of the folk found each other in the geographical area of where the present day capital exists, Uruk. It provided a unique natural harbor that was protected by all sides. Water protected the three sides of the harbor, and the land connecting the harbor to the mainland was narrow. This simple harbor became the centre of power for the New Realm.

During the tectonic shift, the ground shifted with significant force. This created a crack that started from the harbor of Uruk and continued through the continent. Sea water washed through the crack, taking trees, nests and wildlife with it. The force shook through the harbor as the folk ran for protection. Those on the edge of the harbor perished and the makeshift homes collapsed.

Once the dust cleared, the folk took stock of their situation. What they saw was awe-inspiring. A new landscape had formed, one that shone with brilliance and hope.

The Discovery of Enki

I

t was in Uruk, where the folk discovered the precious metal. A young alpha of the name of Höðr, emerged from the chaos to tell the folk of his discovery. From this point on, the harbor of Uruk changed forever.

What Does Uruk Mean?

T

he folk, who were largely from Mesopotamia on Old Earth, called the city Uruk, after their beloved city on Old Earth. Old Uruk was once the centre of civilization. Where folk could discuss the gods, immortality, writing and architecture. Uruk was the pride of the Mesopotamian people. But then the drought came, and the people suffered. Soon, the dragon folk left for a better home, and amid the chaos, they arrived in the protected harbor of the New Realm to start again.

The Significance of Uruk

A

fter the tectonic shift, Uruk’s terrain had changed forever. The quake exposed the New Realm’s most valuable resource, Enki. Within a few years, Uruk became the centre of trade and those in power had complete control over the mines that ran up and down the coast of of the ravine. When word of Uruk’s success spread throughout the realm, folk came in boats from all over.

Source of Income and Trade

T

he metal Enki was and still is the main natural resource of Uruk. The natural harbor forces all ships to stop in Uruk before continuing up the ravine. When the traders arrive, they are required to pay tax to continue up the ravine. While there, traders trade and sell goods before proceeding up the ravine. This simple process is the core of the city's success. Some traders have attempted to push through without paying. The city has since built an enormous chain, made of enki, to block the ravine entrance.
