Circas Species in The New Frontier: Legacy of the Cataclysm | World Anvil

Circas

The circas is a strange creature from the Far Frontier that is known for its unique form of communication. They are spread throughout multiple worlds despite being classified as 'pre-sentient' by the Galactic Surveyor's Guild's xenobiology teams, which lead many to believe that it was a pet or livestock species spread throughout the frontier by Pardians, and possibly engineered by them (a statement some believe to be supported by the remarkable lack of speciation thet species has, even over multiple planets, over a million years). The Circas has only been encountered on worlds with low gravity leading some to believe that the species has since gone extinct on worlds with a higher level of gravity, or indeed were never transplanted there to begin with.   The Circas, like Pardians uses gas expulsion to move themselves, and tend to float slightly above the ground. They lack any noticable skeleton, relying on a balance in pressure between bodily gasses and the atmosphere to keep their bodily structure together. The Circas posseses an unusual form of communication, as they are naturally bioluminescent Circases 'speak' to one another with alternative displays and patterns of light to communicate any number of ideas. The extremely wide array of possible color combinations, and patterns means that a vast array of messages can be communicated, effectively a language. This has led many to believe that the Circas is a likely candidate for evolution into true sentience.

I like the mystery this species has provided due to its presence on so many planets, and the speculation on how it got there. It's clear there is some interesting history in your world.
