Yumijiu

Yumijiu is a grain alcholo fermented from Supermaize, and originally created by Star People from the planet Chang-Er workers as a source of alchohol that could actually intoxicate them. It became an extremely popular beverage on the world, indeed one of the most popular for Chang People. It has become one of the principle products of Chang production, and one of its chief exports. Since the end of the Long Night, Yumjiu production of Yumijiu has expanded to other worlds, though Chang Yumijiu is still widely regared as the best example of the beverage. Supermaize is ground down into a fine paste and added to water, and then a special fermentation mixture is added. Through the process of fermentation the Supermaize paste and water is turned into Yumijiu. The Fermentation materials are often unique to each brewer, and the specific blend of materials is usually a closely guarded secret. Yumijiu is extremely high in alchohol content, and for most Neohumans, and especially Borgs, Terrans, and other less resilient human subspecies drinking an entire bottle is dangerous, perhaps even lethal.
Yumijiu is intended to be consumed in small amounts with a group of approximately half a dozen people (traditionally of a single gender), who share a bottle each take turns drinking a shot of the beverage. This activity is to be shared with the telling, or retelling of tales, the singing of songs, or other activities where a gift with words is required. This activity is primarily intended to be a bonding excercise, though there is an element of competition involved in certain social circles. For Yumijiu is a highly intoxicating beverage, and as participants in traditional Yumijiu drinking rituals must try to maintain enough sobreity to successful recount stories. It can be seen as embarrassing to be made too inebrieated by drinking Yumijiu to be able to speak effectively. Outside of Chang tradition, Yumijiu has become a popular beverage for high proof cocktails, or as a challenge for those who claim to have a high tolerance for alcohol.
