Urean Kingdom

Królestwo Mocznika

The Urean Kingdom is a Techno-Feudal state located at the frontier between the Urea Nebula and wider Civilized Space. The Urean Kingdom is generally locked into constant conflict with its main neighbors the Cormorant Principality, and the Spinward Urean Republic, but due to carefully negotiated treaties and strictly enforced customs, these three powers don't damage each other much with their constant fighting. It is relatively unique in its political organization, technology, and economics and stands as one of the few major examples of a an Techno-Feudalist state extending beyond a single star system, alongside its rival the Cormorant Principality.

Culture

The Urean Kingdom was initially settled by corporate entities instead of by nationalities which meant that people from all over Old Earth and from outside Earth as well. Over time, Central European immigrants became the majority, though during the Jred Scourge, migrants fleeing from the Jred made the Kingdom's population more diverse once again. In the current era, the Kingdom's culture is built around a more authoritarian tendencies than its chief rival, the Cormorant Principality, with a stronger emphasis on maintaining the social hierarchy, and respect for ones "betters".

History

The worlds that would eventually make up the Urean Kingdom were settled during the Second Expansion as the settlement craze caused by the discovery of Pardian ruins occurred. In a fairly unusual occurrence for the expansionary efforts under the Transolar Federation, these colonies were established by corporate, rather than state, overlords with the rights to the inner Urean clusters being sold to Allimany Holdings, and the Urea Colonial Corporation as the primary sponsors. Eager to get settlement underway, the worlds were not fully terraformed before the first settlers arrived, and life was difficult for these pioneers, who quickly became hardened to the realities of a world where struggling for survival was the norm, a tradition which eventually carried over into a state of fierce competitiveness that lasted the worlds until the collapse of interstellar civilization.

Due to the isolation of these worlds, and the simple fact that it was already so hard to survive, the latter days of the of the Federation would pass fairly quietly, though Urea and Excreta would see some battle during the Third Great Human Civil War, as the anti-Frentierists launched a few failed attempts to seize control of the gateway worlds. Urea was a major target for Stellar League expansion and during the days of the Third Expansion, Urea Excreta and Sardukia became major hubs for further colonization of the Nebula, growing rich in the process. Using these funds the primary worlds of the systems were terraformed into beautiful garden worlds, a model for Urean planets. Much of the wealth however, was funneled off the corporations, and so despite the improved living conditions, Urea and its neighbors began to fall behind ecnomically.

The gateway systems would be spared the worst of the Jred Scourge, which ravaged the rimward reaches of Stellar League territory, with the largest impact being the influx of refugees which came to the gateway worlds in much greater numbers than many of their neighbors. However, due to the interference of wealthy citizens, many of these refugees were then exported to other close systems, particularly those of the Hangul expanse. When The Great Cataclysm shattered galactic civilization, Urea was left as the defacto ruler of the sector. However, lacking the means to enforce this claim, the Urea Sector collapsed into a patchwork of independent systems. In this chaos Miklos Monika, a relatively high ranking officer in the region turned regional warlord quickly established control over the Urea System, eventually seizing a few more before further expansion became logistically unfeasible. Monika quickly established himself as king, giving of his most important Lieutenants titles of nobility, and it was this nucleus that formed the Urean Kingdom.

The Urean Kingdom found itself in a difficult position, surrounded by a number of hostile star systems, and harder hit by the corruption of their Standard Build Template databases, they had to rebuild industry from scratch before all the leftover technological relics fell apart. By the time this problem had been corrected, two new states the Urean Spinward Republic, and the Cormorant Principality had arisen. Since then these three states have been locked into a perpetual cycle of increasing tensions. However, thanks to the delicately negotiated treaties paying homage to the unique conditions of the Nebula, conflicts have remained fairly small scale. However, the Kingdom sees the possibility of initiating a larger conflict, with the current king Miklos III seeking a partnership with the Saratov Antisocialist Organization to oppose the Urean Spinward Republic, and with that rival knocked out, it is believed that the Principality will fall in line.

Demography and Population

The Urean Kingdom is the least populated of the three main Urean states, with a population numbering in the low billions primarily centered around its capital world, Urea. This population is fairly widely dispersed with small holdings scattered throughout Urean territory, but with concentrated areas becoming significant hubs for political power within the Kingdom. The bulk of the Kingdom's population originally hailed from Central Europe, with a strong influence coming from the ancient nations of Poland and Lithuania, though as history progressed, the population of its constituent worlds became increasingly diverse.

Territories

The Urean Kingdom is highly condensed with three inhabited systems, and no extrastellar space claimed for its territorial use. Each of these systems is fairly well developed with one main world hosting the bulk of the population and several minor colonies primarily for extraction and dangerous industries, but with some having become fairly developed and urbanized themselves. The King has considered annexing Brimbor, but has concerns over integrating such a hostile population have stymied these developments for the time being.

Military

The Urean Kingdom has the largest standing military in the Urea Nebula, with a sizable class of semihereditary professional soldiers bolstered by a periodic rotation of levies from outside the class. Much of this military is geared towards the unique form of Lancer based warfare that has grown up within cultures in the Urea Nebula. However, as the gateway state between the Nebula and outside powers, the Urean Kingdom must also be ready to fight a conventional war, and has prepared accordingly. As a result, the Urean Navy is unusually large and comparatively well equipped, importing a fair amount of advanced warships in order to see off invaders into the Urea Nebula.

Technological Level

As with many states within the Urea Nebula, the technological base of the Urean Kingdom is strange. Though it slightly less advanced than the Kavans, with no worlds officially maintaining a "stellar" era technical base, every would has at least stayed within the fusion age. The Ureans are seeking the means to techologically uplift their worlds so that they can keep up with their rivals, but are struggling to find partners willing to assist in this regard.

Religion

The Urean Kingdom does have a state religion, Opus Dei, and is essentially the headquarters of the Ureanist Sect of the Faith. Opus Dei maintains a privileged status in the Kingdom, with it being the only religion allowed to sponsor religious schools, and given exemption from taxation among others. However, the free practice of religion is not forbidden, and members of many other faiths have communities in the Kingdom. Currently the most popular religions is Opus Dei, but various sects of Christianity, are also present, and there is a sizable minority of Buddhists and Hindus that call the Kingdom home.

Foreign Relations

The Urean Kingdom is largely isolated form the rest of the galaxy, though to a lesser extent than other states within the Urea Nebula. However, it does maintain a balance of power with its neighbors. The Kingdom asserts that it is the rightful hegemon of all states within the Nebula. However, the unique political, sociological, and technological conditions within the nebula have ensured that disputes are contained. Rather, the Kingdom participates in a series of highly ritualized combats with other Urean states as a matter of settling disputes. This has ensured that there is a frequent cycle of slowly escalating tensions that get undercut with the odd Lancer duel serving as a means of reducing them periodically.

Laws

The Urean Kingdom is broadly a "mid law level" nation, though particulars depend on the whims of the local ducal or county officials. Citizens can generally expect a reasonable degree of civil liberties, can bear certain arms, and are generally not interfered with in their daily lives. However, more capricious members of the aristocracy can be crueler and more exacting in their own laws so it is generally a worthy endeavor to be mindful of exactly where you are within the Kingdom before doing any activity can be considered risky. The Urean Kingdom is also noteworthy in that it actively represses psionic activities within its territories. This is largely seen as a defensive measure, and no violent suppression is generally taken, but psions entering Urean territory are expected to take psi blockers for the duration of their stay.

Agriculture & Industry

The Urean Kingdom possesses a broad, but not an especially deep economic base. It maintains reasonable output in the primary, secondary, and tertiary economic sectors, producing a fair amount of agricultural products, mid-tech industrial and consumer goods, and is a mid-tech military construction powerhouse. However, with such a broad economic base the Kingdom often needs to import a number of things, particularly consumer goods, that are not prioritized by Urean industry. It is however, one of the galaxy's leading producers of Lancers, providing most of the lower tech models compared with the more boutique, high-tech options produced by the Comorant Principality.

Education

The education system of the Urean Republic maintains a highly disjointed education system. Nominally, it maintains a system of public schools that give its entire citizen body the same basic education in the natural and social sciences, mathematics and the language arts. However, few of the constituent lords are interested in maintaining this system, and many public schools find themselves severely underfunded, understaffed, and offering poor services. This has resulted in wealthier students attending one of many networks of private schools, in effect creating a two-tier system for the people. The wealthy and professional classes getting a decent education at a private academy, and the poor and working class getting only the most rudimentary learning in one of the underfunded public schools.

Infrastructure

The Urean Kingdom serves as the heart of the Jumpgate network in the Urea Sector, and is one a rare few states to possess working Jumpgates throughout the entirety of its territory. This provides the Kingdom an extremely high speed route to transfer trade goods, as well as military units through the whole of its territory. Additionally, the Urean Kingdom itself controls a cluster of high quality starports. Taken together, the Kingdom is one of the best developed states, at least in terms of basic interstellar infrastructure, in the galaxy, even as it struggles in other economic fields
