First Mate Wulfric Kanagal (a.k.a. Bearkiller)

Wulfric is the first mate of Ourania and the head of security for the Saffron Sun. Despite being a Goliath of considerable build and wielding a large double-headed battle axe, he does not seem to mind flights ten-thousand feet in the sky.

Personal history

Wulfric was born in the small village of Kanagal, named for the clan of Goliaths that live there. The village is located high up in the Eastern Chain mountains, south of Lake Norvum. The clan was technically in the territory of Nor'Vagu, but they had autonomy and never bothered themselves with the politics of the outside world, going about their day-to-day business as Goliaths tend to do.

At the age of 13, Wulfric passed his clan's test of becoming an adult, climbing the tall mountain nearby with a boulder on his back and only an axe for protection. During the journey, he slew his first beast, a great brown bear that lived up in the mountains. As Wulfric tells the tale, he ate the bear's heart for strength and wore the bear's fur as a cloak, which is how he made it up the mountain during a surprise blizzard in late-spring.

Wulfric grew up strong and proud in the village, and everyone respected his strength. When war began to brew in the late 50s, Nor'Vagu called for conscriptions from every village, including the Goliath villages. Kanagal contributed thirty of their best men and women to the army, and Wulfric was chief among them. Wulfric was given a choice after boot camp: join the ground forces or join the Air Force. Given his childhood in the mountains, Wulfric felt more at home closer to the sky, so he joined the Air Force.

It was then during the war that Wulfric and his airship crew encountered a group fo sky pirates led by an aaracokra named Ourania. The two fought to draw, his barbaric strength and her roguish agility. Afterwards, they teamed up to take on a bigger prize: an Aurelian Flight Wheel airship. Flight Wheels were valuable, as they were infused with magic and made airships faster and more maneuverable than anything in the Nor'Vagan fleet. At a great battle, they caught an airship on the outskirts and captured it, and they named their new prize the Amber Sun.

After the war ended, Ourania and Wulfric forged new documents for themselves and their crew which allowed them to make a living as merchants, using the Amber Sun, but they were more than willing to do illegal stuff on the side. In 1674, they met the Resistance and Squad Chi in Tritenea, and they fought Aurelian soldiers alongside them in Mythal Thalore. It was then that Wulfric joined the Resistance with everyone else. Some months later, they fought in the Battle of Eadra, in which the Amber Sun was sacrificed to try and stop an orc-controlled airship from breaching the wall. Although unsuccessful, Wulfric proved his might at the battle of Eadra with a kill count of over a hundred orcs.

Since then, aboard their new airship, the Saffron Sun, Ourania and Wulfric have continued their merchant journeys at peace among the clouds. Occasionally, Wulfric will pick up side jobs in the cities that require a more hand-on approach, but he has remained a strong and trustworthy friend to Ourania and to the crew, who he watches over like a mother bear.

Relationship Reasoning

They are both in charge of the Saffron Sun. Ourania is the captain who charts most of their courses and negotiates each of their merchant jobs. Wulfric runs security for the ship, trains the crew, and runs the engine room/Flight Wheels.

Wulfric is Ourania's first mate aboard the Saffron Sun. He strikes an imposing figure, this eight foot Goliath with a battle-ax over his shoulder, willing to fly ten thousand feet above the mountains. But there is an odd kindness in Wulfric, as he looks after every one of the crew and the captain as if they were all children.
