January 34th Character in The Myriad Realms | World Anvil

January 34th

January is, arguably, the strangest of all members of the Hero Company - as one could expect from a representative of the Realm of Days. It is a monster, on many fields more terrifying than the demons that it was fighting. That much simply cannot be argued against.   However, this didn't stop January from being seen by a lot of those who got to interact with the Hero Company as one of the most unquestionably heroic members of it.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

January is a shoggoth, an amorphous, shapeshifting blob of vaguely liquidish-flesh that can easily act as a horrifyingly powerful and precise acid (or it has some other form of dissolving flesh). It proved capable of devouring its enemies' entire muscular system (without touching their nerves) before replacing the muscles with its own flesh, turning them into operated (and still conscious) fleshpuppets).

Personal history

Pre-Hellfire War
No one exactly knows what January was doing before the Hellfire War. Realm of Days was - and still is - isolated from the Aurgentia as a whole. No one wanted to get involved with the stronghold of aberrants in the middle of the continent. Whenever someone did try to get involved, it was in most cases done by trying to wipe them out.   Realm of Days was treated as both an alien thing... and a simple matter of fact, that people learned to just walk past and ignore. There were some attempts of the bordering countries to try to understand how it worked, but in the end, they didn't manage to fully figure it out. that was, perhaps, understandable with aberrants.   January itself didn't appear to be particularly interested in talking about it.

Hellfire War
January became known to the world early into the war, on the day of Realm of Days unexpected intervention. The shoggoth was leading the army deployed by the Realm to lift the siege of Tavum, crushing most of the Hellfire's 2nd Southern Army in a single night.   A single, terrifying night. Screams alone were said to drive multiple defenders of Tavum completely insane. They were all too terrified to even try to see the battle (and those that did, regretted it deeply). It was over by the first light of the day.   January showed up in person to greet the inhabitants of Tavum and tell them that the siege was over. Wearing the still conscious (and clearly horrified and rapidly going insane) body of the leader of the 2nd Southern Army. Soon after that, it had met with Flamelight, who at this time was leading an local Alzath-Kalanian army, trying to weaken the besieging army for months.   Whatever happened during that meeting, January left it with what appeared to be a purest form of disdain for the magister. Disdain that eventually escalated, and led to Mirriam Artori and Tertius Syllus joining January in attempting to kill Flamelight soon after Hellfire perished.   January wasn't officially nominated into the Hero Company. Instead, it was treated as a de facto member of it for the duration of the war. Once it ended, January retreated back to the Realm of Days. It is believed, however, that he is keeping some contact through DivineNET with Artori and Syllus.

Morality & Philosophy

Significant part of January's psyche is as complicated and strange as you'd expect from an aberrant. No one - aside from other aberrants - could truly hope to understand it. However, some of its companions managed to develop what could be considered a solid theory on its morality.   January might be a completely alien individuality and a near-eldritch abomination, but just as there were non-aberrants fascinated with such individuals, so was January fascinated with non-aberrants.   It's heavily suspected that it was January's own influence that made the Realm of Days join the war. As by intervening in it, the Realm of Days could easily prop itself from being an isolated realm of aberrants to a recognized country. In fact, it has made them into something of a desirable neighbour.   After all, they didn't invade their neighbours. They clearly wanted to be allowed to live on their land. And if shit around them really hit the fan, they were clearly ready to intervene. Even if it was done at least partially to keep the neighbours from trying to uproot them by proving that they really don't have any hostile intentions.   It was also a perfect way of letting January interact with non-aberrants without the latters trying to burn it on the stake. And, besides, if someone slaughters non-aberrants, there'd be no one for January to try to meet, understand and, in its own od way, befriend. Intervening was perfectly logical, right?   It also appeared to spend a notable part of its life gathering a collection of things made by non-aberrants he encountered along the journey, although no discernible pattern to that collection was ever noticed by its companion.
